Val: Holly and Alix are going to grow up and leave someday.
Joan: With luck.
Val: Then it'll just be ME. Sitting alone in this kitchen!
Joan: What about PHIL?
Val: What about him?
Holly: I told you she needed help.
My own mom can attest sitting alone in the house with husband my dad passed on us kids married and she gets lonely. With Evie married and gone I can understand Val and she may not be ready to have Phil around all the time. Maybe Holly will help her aunt see why her mom does not get it about Phil. For us I wonder what empty nesters like. Our own adult children cannot move out no jobs.
I don’t think that Val is consciously acting obtuse. Her expression in the last panel indicates that she is being defensive. She has dug in, and let someone dare to try to change her mind!
This is classic build up for a comic. with grandma married off its no longer the story of three generations. Does it take the obvious turn or stick to story?
Currently on 3 dating sites, I have made it clear that I only want a man in the location where I plan to be, and sharing some hobbies which I can admire. Education/intelligence is also important, but I just need someone who can keep up his end of a conversation and have something to brag on (like woodwork or brewing). With my many hobbies, I’ll be constantly busy in Sun City and just want a man to take care of and love. I’m chatting with many and I know I’ll find a good one. Many like to cook but I prefer to do all the womanly things (especially cooking and sewing).

If you look back ten years val and phil are discussing how they wished they spent more time together.

She clearly, does not see him in the picture. He is no dummy, and senses that. A gentleman does not go where he is not wanted. The next move is hers,

Are you deliberately being obtuse, Val, or do you not see the writing on the wall?

Yes Val it is time to start planning for your senior trips like your mother. Just be sure that Holly or Alix has a house you can call a room home.

All I can figure is that she must not really love Phil. She likes him, but doesn’t love him, which is a shame, because he’s a nice guy.
