I’ve always regarded the word “marriage” as more religious or emotional in context, whereas “civil union” actually is about civil RIGHTS. We shouldn’t let emotion rule over law, under our Constitution.

This is quite clear from what the Founders said and wrote: separation of church from state is key to a successful republic. Remember that many of them had ancestors who came over specifically because they were forced to submit to someone else’s religion.By the way, what “Christians” do you refer to? Brass Orchid: your comment on marriages protecting the genetic or family line made me think of all the inbreeding that occurred in the royalty of Europe, leading to nut cases and disabled from birth kids in the line. Eastern European Jews also have suffered many genetic failings and inherited “diseases” like Te Sachs (sic) and a couple other lethal mutations. Then there are just the general isolated social groups around the world that have the same problems.
Which of course brings up the actual wisdom of the relgions and societies that have long banned interbreeding of close relatives, while in other idiocy of teachings, the opposite is true.
