Sorry, you can’t get any sympathy from me on that - I loathe the stench of coffee and agree that addictive behavior needs to be broken.

Yes, but it’s not her decision to make, ejcapulet – and certainly not unilaterally. She should have at least shared her concerns with him before she decided to just cut him off without warning. That’s not only rude and inconsiderate on her part, but also counterproductive. What’s to stop him from having coffee at work, or at anyplace else that’s not home, if he doesn’t WANT to quit drinking it?

I love the smell and taste of coffee. Actually hate the smell & taste of tea. Also, all the research says up to five cups a day are perfectly fine and may even have some health benefits. Of course, the “wake up” effect is actually over-rated – a good night’s sleep is much better.

But the main point here – and legaleagle48 made it nicely – is that it’s his decision to make. I’d suggest he run right out to buy a cup then go to the grocery store and buy a pound.

When coffee was extremely expensive in the 80’s I gave it up for 6 years. Worse than when I quit smoking.

I have one travel mug of coffee a day, the rest of it is spent drinking water or herbal teas… :)

    Good Morning to ALL!!!

I see some of the other anti-control freaks are here with me today. You don’t quit alone, but you need to decide to quit alone.

If you want to end your marriage, keep making decisions for your spouse, Andy. If you married anything other than an amoeba, there’s a spine there somewhere.

Concur with most of the opinions expressed here, even the self-described freaks.

Caffeine addiction - like any drug addiction - can have serious, painful withdrawal symptoms that can wreak havoc on your health and your relationships with others. I know from personal experience. I became addicted to caffeine in college when I had a very difficult software class. I’d say in the computer lab for 18 hours at a time, trying to get my programs to compile and run properly and ended up caffeine dependent. Years later, when I decided I needed to quit because of high blood pressure, withdrew S L O W L Y and everything was fine. But I remember Saturdays (before quitting) when I’d sleep in and awake with a tremendous headache because my body was demanding caffeine.

In real life, Andy & Roger should have discussed this together and arrived at a plan. It’s what people in good marriages do or people who want to have a good marriage.

“sharpens the brain” coming from another self-proclaimed expert…

Reminds me of how heroin was described in the early 1900’s as having wonderful health benefits; “sharpening the mind” and “clearing the complexion” being among them.

Regular exercise sharpens the mind better, for longer and is healthier.

If he’s not getting any at home, he might just go outside the marriage to get it.

This isn’t to say that coffee is better than sex. Well, at least for some of us. Sometimes.

albertonencioni, if you wake up with your 22 year old, blonde Russian secretary, and you STILL need coffee to get going, then you have far greater problems than a caffeine addiction.

I can’t stand the taste of coffee, If I need caffeine to keep awake I’ll drink a Pepsi (not that diet stuff that tastes like metal, the “high test” stuff with sugar and high fructose corn syrup). Jolt Cola or the other “energy drinks” are too strong for me, they make me so jittery I can’t solder and people think I’ve been doing illegal stimulants.

I’m with you @ejcapulet I can’t stand the smell of coffee, and hate seeing the addicting effects it has on people.

As for the comic, I do agree that she should have talked to him about it first, but if he wants a cup he will just go out and get one.

Let the man have his coffee. If caffeine is his only addiction, count yourself lucky, lady. Perhaps the point is less java-control than it is husband control (some people just like to micro-manage).

It’s quite possible to enjoy coffee daily without becoming addicted to it. It helps to add cocoa to take off the edge.
