Val: Phil? Would you like to come over for dinner?
Phil: Dinner IN? Sounds pretty domestic.
Val: Don't get your hopes up!
Phil: Hey, it'll be a step up from FISH STICKS, right?
Val: *
Phil: Although I do LOVE a good fish stick.
Val: Nice save.

Or he’s just quick on the uptake.
Boy, Val’s not doing a whole lot to reel him in, is she? I would’ve at least swung by the store for pre-packaged lasagna or something. Remember, the way to a man’s heart …

I’m sorry, Fairportfan2, but did you say that Phil has been married before?! So if Val is a widow, then is Phil a divorcé?
Gotta love fish sticks, though.

Val, you can do better than fish sticks. Send Wally to the store for a chicken, broccoli, crusty bread, & a bottle of red. A chicken’ll pretty much roast itself.

“A chicken’ll pretty much roast itself.”
Makes me think of an old Elmer Fudd cartoon where a chicken thinks Elmer is going to have him for Sunday dinner. In the last seen he’s in a roster in the oven basting himself.

We throw a flag on the bikini. This bot has hit every comic in the place. Bury the bikini under your flags too.

For a first meal Val you need to think better ask Phil what he likes to eat.

You can buy rotisserie chickens that are not too expensive and are very good. A nice salad and some warm garlic bread. Yum!

Val sure doesn’t sound like she’s even trying. She begrudgingly invites him over for…fish sticks?! come on, Val, you can do better, and if you don’t want to try, dump him and put him out of his misery!

Frozen fish sticks can actually make the starting point for a more interesting meal. Whip up a quick and easy sweet and sour sauce (or use store bought sauce from a jar, if you need to) and serve sweet and sour fish with rice.

Fish sticks are served best with a box of Kraft mac & cheese!

Fish sticks are what you serve to your KIDS before you go OUT to dinner, not what you fix for a date.

It IS important to actually learn to cook; my 3 boys and 1 daughter all were taught to do SOMETHING in cooking. My G’ma was great, but never taught my mom. I cooked for parents and brother since 7th grade, so I made sure my kids learned! As a den mother I also made my own “cooking badge” for our pack- and did it with a family outdoor event (meatloaf, baked potato and corn)-a little more complicated with what I gave for seasoning and the “fun dessert”, but I LOVE teaching kids the appreciation of food. I had earlier also had 9 boys making hard candy (and a mess) in my house ;-)

It’s pretty well established in this strip that Val can’t cook - but even I agree that fish sticks is a pretty weak offering.

How does Phil switch badges so quickly? He seems to have a collection of 6-, 7-, 8-, and 9-pointed designs. Only the 6-pointed version is missing in this strip.
