Insurance Agent: Hey, get this, everybody! The widow Grimley here begs to be excused from our massive new rate hike because she's old, broke, and sick! Is that precious or what? Little Man: It's unpatriotic to be old, broke, and sick - tell her that!

Every Insurance company should be sued and their intake funds returned to the poor individuals having to pay them.

There was no insurance of any kind when the pilgrams landed and the colonies were established…..and America was born. How in the world did we do that with no insurance companies?
Jason Allen about 14 years ago
Um…. there may not have been insurance companies in the “New World” when the pilgrims landed, but there were plenty in England and mainland Europe at the time.
The idea behind insurance is a good one, but modern corporate greed and malfeasance has tainted and corrupted it.

Look up supreme court case Ford vs. Dodge. By law corporations are REQUIRED to make a profit.

There were no doctors or hospitals when the Pilgrims arrived either. Are you suggesting that also should be our model for the future?
cartwrights about 14 years ago
Actually, Brad, hospitals and doctors had existed back In Europe for hundreds of years. And in the “New World,” the First Peoples had their own healers.

Unfortunately, this cartoon reflects EXACTLY the attitude the Insurance companies have towards us. Sick? Too bad, so sad. Heart transplant? HAHAHAHAHA.

Does anyone remember the last poll numbers for a public option? I think it was 55-ish percents in favor back in October 2009. Gee, I wonder why…

History can be an interesting reality if one is serious about learning with an open, non-partisan mind what happened to cause the state we are in:
The folks who invested in Columbus were insured. Of course the pilgrims were insured with the corporate and governmental entities that funded their voyage; as was the blood of the native peoples sacrificed as redemption for the investment and profit structure. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1345625/John-Alden-and-Priscilla-Alden#ref=ref127459 Survival and assimilation were assured as was the profits of the corporations and governments involved.
Looking into the slave trade a person can see just one of the many examples of where today’s insurance trade developed it’s attitude and power………..

Republican gov’s of FLA/CA cut benefits for elderly and disabled, (like hitler), as “middle class” eats itself.. WHY? “because being old , ill is unpatriotic…now i understand.

Most of the pilgrims died. Then there was the first effort at Jamestown where they ALL died.
Hmmmmm, “bleeding” the patient was also a practice that killed most patients, just like insurance companies bleeding folks dry, then dropping them when they need medical care.
Yep, pure private is the way to go- them kindly folks, like Enron, AIG, Bernie Madoff- think about it.

RV; After reading my policies, attempting communication with several different kinds of insurance and their companies I fail to see a difference. They all seem very happy at the prospect of my payment and very unhappy at the prospect of my wellbeing should I have to file a claim……….
cfimeiatpap about 14 years ago
RV; You are absolutely correct. Which leads me back to my analogy; instead of paying for privateers not privatizing (I think that is what you meant) we now pay insurance to keep us from becoming shanghaied by either a corporation or government. Just stop paying your mortgage insurance or car insurance and watch what happens. To the theme of Mr. Oliphant’s caricature; for a very high sum you can guarantee you will continue to receive healthcare, problem is only about 1% of the population can afford that guarantee. I think it was near the same percentage back in the day………

There weren’t any CAT scans or MRIs when the pilgrims landed either – should we go back to the health care they had. Or better yet we could all consult the Bible for our healthcare and just skip the medical profession altogether. And what a shame the Bush administration missed their chance to put all our Social Security funds into the Stock Market – that would have been such fun last year wouldn’t it?

Looks like one of those “death panels” we keep hearing about.
