The dictionaries I’ve consulted indicate that both “straitjacket” and “straightjacket” are now accepted spellings. That said, it appears that it “straitjacket” may have been the original spelling, but that the more common spelling now is “straightjacket.”
When I was in school during the previous millenium,one of the strictures of correctness was that droppin’ one’s g’s was not done. Later came to know that in England, doin’ just that was a mark of upper-classiness; only the proles pronounced the g….In the US I believe everybody does it nowadays,at least in quick speech. Much has changed, many of us alte Kacker think for the worse.
Even Bill does things that were/are deplored bylater, prescriptive grammarians.
