You don’t ask yes/no questions. Ask open-ended ones and let Riley talk himself into trouble.

Yeah it’s just about Middle school age when the lil Rascals start using legalistic arguments and manipulations of their elders. It’s a great double edged sword. By their cleverness they can end up rationalizing a great lazy unproductive life. On the other hand they can become an attorney or a doctor or an engineer. I knew one poor kid, a painter by trade. Never graduated high school but became a millionaire by age 35 (about 1980) fixing up and renting beat up houses.
