France and England were enemies for centuries although things improved during Victoria’s reign. Between France and Scotland was the “auld alliance” which at times involved targeting England diplomatically or via war. And there was that time France helped thirteen colonies….But France and Britain were allies in the Crimea, WWI and WWII. DeGaulle opposed Britain’s entry into the Common Market but overall since the 19th century relations between the two countries have been good.

We British have a love-hate relationship with many of our European neighbours. It’s not really surprising, since the majority of the white population are descended from Romans, Norse, Angles, Saxons, Normans, and a range of other invaders down the centuries.

And I thought the Americans didn’t like France (never mind the short memory of the Revolution).
