What a question from a young grandchild. You should never EVER say those words, Nelson, after mishearing them.

I get a chuckle everyday from reading this strip! It’s so appropriate for us older folks because we’ve all been there. It was one of my late husband’s favorites. Every morning he would bring it to my attention!

You’re a better person than I am, Earl if you don’t swear out loud. Just don’t read anything to do with politics and maybe you won’t feel such a need.

My dad never swears. I suppose it’s possible he may think swear words, but I somehow doubt it. The only time he uses any swear words are when he is directly quoting something, and even then only when he can’t figure a way out of it while leaving the quote intact.I hope to eventually achieve that sort of self-control. There’s not much point to swearing, really.

I pretty much just say “Bleep” or “Bleeping.” Actually makes a decent substitute.

I swear to myself when I’ve dropped something that makes a noise on the floor.

But I never swear at other people even when they are being stupid.

My father never swore at home when I was growing up. I learned most of the no-no words from my mother when she lost her temper. Dad waited until I was married before any of those showed up in his speech. When I was a delivery driver, those words and a couple additions were frequent driving partners. I’ve tried over the years to excise them from my speech and largely have been successful. With over 600,000 words in the English language there are so many other ways for one to express their discontent.

a friend of my family, very nice older Christian lady who you couldn’t imagine ever cursing, unfortunately had alzheimer’s in her last years and when it got really bad & she’d pretty much lost herself completely she started cursing a blue streak. It was so odd hearing her do it and it made you wonder if she had always cursed just “not out loud”
