It’s probably a conspiracy with the universities to fluff up the Freshman class, often taught by grad students rather than full profs; the freshmen drop out after a year, because they can’t cut it, and the universities use the cash to build a new stadium and hire a million dollar a year football coach, to attract more freshmen who would be better off learning a lucrative trade.
Back in 1966, one of the colleges I applied to sent someone out to our house in the country to interview me. He was an alum, and he regarded it as pay-back for the education he had received. They had a whole network of alums doing interviews all across the country. I went to visit the other college I applied to and sat in on classes. I think they would have sent someone to interview me if I hadn’t visited.
