In the National Spelling Bee several years ago, one of the words given was “H”. The speller thought with a very confused look on his face, and eventually said “eche”. Wrong. H is spelled aitch. Just like it sounds. I knew it from seeing it in crossword puzzles.

What’s called for here is a monologue to an imaginary audience about it. (An S apostrophe.)Technically, though, pluralized S-es should be spelled S-es.

In crosswords, “ess” is typically how “s” is spelled — as in an ess-curve.

BTW, I like “spelt” as an alternative past participle of smell. Reminds me of the adage of “He who smelt it, dealt it.”

Incidentally, I used “esses” in my comic this week: http://downscale.comicgenesis.com/d/20140128.html

I don’t remember the comic in which he said that there are more S’s in Missy than in Scott. Am I losing my mind? Am I lost in a parallel universe? Surely the reptilian amnesia rays can’t have penetrated my foil helmet….
