still, if you drag around, opportunities pass by.’twould be better not to call the father an old fool, thoughsure, parents look like fools to children but knowing she has a child who surely thinks she is a fool should shed some light on the situation.

I guessed wrong on this one. I thought pop was leaving the business to the kids.

No Gene in such a long time, only a snippet on holidays, not even a trip this past summer to visit Arlo’s boat! Then suddenly, Drama, Drama , Drama.

Ok, I give up. What happened to the farm? You cannot just walk away from a farm and have it to return to. The last few strips Mary Lou sounded like she wanted the business. She and Gene bought the farm because she wanted to “Run away to the Land.” (She was sick of the beach life. Now, it looks good?). But, now it looks like she and Gene will get money instead.

It may be that Mary Lou is not disrespectful. It may be more or an affectionate “he shouldn’t have done that” type of thing. My mother in law needed help from us for the necessities, but gave our family a color TV to replace the old b & w that the past owner of our house had leff behind. We thought it was foolish of her, but we understood.

Not impressed with “the old fool” part. I don’t care how it’s spun, it reveals an attitude that isn’t pretty.

“Darn him”? Does the old man have a hole in his sock?

That would make her life much easier. She refers to her dad as an old fool in an affectionate way.

This is what I’ve been calling all week. They’ve got the farm, they’ve got the money to get it working and they’ve got the time now to make a go of it.

Try saying “the old fool” with a catch in your throat, or if that doesn’t work substitute “the sweet old fool.”

I know we’re discussing the motivations of characters in a work of fiction. Would it be any different if the author were Dickens or Twain?
