Unsuccessfully chasing flies is a much more intellectual sport, and is the culmination of the hunting skills of generations of lions, tigers and puma on the great plains, tracking down and capturing eagles, falcons and great Pterosaurs.

Let’s see what happens when a ball of yarn is rolled pass the kitties. Or see if they will follow the bouncing light from a laser pointer.

When I had three cats, long ago, their idea of “bringing home a present” was to “kill” a twig, drop it on the front stairs and brag about it. Then again, their favorite pastime was playing fetch with a keychain rabbit’s foot, so they may have been thinking the twig could be used for fetch, too.

As for intelligence – Two of the cats had figured out how to open doors with round knobs, one liked playing practical jokes on her owner (like sneaking up from behind, jumping to tap her on the shoulder and then running away before being seen) and another one had almost mastered teleportation.

I’ve always supported the self-domestication theory.
