I agree with both of the above. i can understand Agnes’ wanting to make a better life for herself, poverty sucks, but it is also a great motivator. At the same time, she should not be looking for shortcuts, just apply herself in school, find out what she’s good at (besides making us laugh on a regular basis), spend less time in the Principal’s office and more time with a school counselor, and get the training she needs.

The adults can do their job to guide and mold, and Trout can do her job and just be a kid.

Everyone needs a friend to tell them when their life is in ruins or not.

See. Trout supportative. Just because Agnes is having a streak of nothing goes right doesn’t mean her life is in ruins.

Agnes doesn’t think her life is “sordid!”And Grandma encourages her plenty, in her way…. It’s just that she knows she has to rein in Agnes’ wild imagination.

She’s trying so hard to be practical….We’ve seen her be playful, but she’s stressed by monetary woes…. And certainly, she saw where wild thinking led her daughter (Agnes’ mother) … (Or maybe it was her son, who is Agnes’ father….) and she wants to do a “better job”, in her mind, guiding Agnes.

So her wit is a little sarcastic… but Agnes knows that…. If what Jeff suggests were easy, I’d have had a different life, myself….If Agnes were capable of it, I’m sure it would be helpful….but we wouldn’t have a comic strip.

I would add that Agnes does not need a school counselor. She is on a first name footing with the principal. Principals can be very helpful. .Though I think the principal learns more with every visit from Agnes than what Agnes learns from the principal.
