“Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n——s to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around … Now that would be a true southern wedding, wouldn’t it?”
What a lovely, lovely woman. And what a shock that conservatives are rushing to defend her.
Um, folks, it was NOT a single word uttered decades ago. Read the actual news stories and the transcript. She wanted to put together an antebellum-style Southern wedding for clients with slaves, she wanted to name a dish the Sambo burger and had to be dissuaded by her producers — it’s a rather consistent pattern, she knew better, and she did not respond as a public figure should. If Obama said something like this, you’d be on him like white on rice, as Southerners say…
I don ‘t know whether Paula Deen is racist or not, but I do know that asking a person born in the 40’s whether they have EVER used the “N” word is absurd on the face of it. There were several objects I couldn’t name without using it. And I can remember when we learned to say, “eeny, meenie, minie, mo, catch a TIGER by the toe,” instead of the way we had always said it.
Granted, I was born in Nov of 1949 – my parents were old school Republicans and I can honestly say I not only have never used the word, I never heard it at home. And this was in Orange County.
She adequately explained when and how she used the word. I’ve used the word to describe a “certain narrow class” of people, white and black. Much as I dislike the word when thrown out to describe a whole body of people, when rappers stop using the word, maybe others should too?
The excuse of “well, he’s my brother and I can call him what I want”, shouldn’t fly anymore either. When a black comic constantly relies on the “F” word and the “N” word with every “joke”, I turn ‘em off. It was particularly noticeable and disgusting on "Def Comedy Jam’.
REmember when the “Sambo’s” restaurant chain caught flack?
Harley, for once we’re pretty much in agreement. I tend to write in “human” on those race forms on occasion, but being German and Cherokee, with the occasional crazy Irish way back when. It isn’t the “words” btw, but the mentality of those who use them, and I have seen those in the south in the 60’s turn very dangerous when using the word. Yes, I’ve also been invited to a Klan rally by a friend who lived back there. The I.Q.s present were pretty close to zero.

The Klan was more a Democrat organization from its inception against the Lincoln politics of post civil war south

Enough about Bush and Cheney. More junk has happened in the past 5 years. Nothing was fixed and now we have a dictator government.

A person’s behavior is what is important.

Paula Deen is just a cook on cable TV. If she was an elected official, making laws or upholding laws I might care what she said. But I don’t.

Either Paula Deen is a whole lot more famous than I thought, or someone is really desperate for a distraction.
