If I remember this story, Elly’s parents live on a farm and keep Michael busy with chores. I won’t spoil it by saying anything more.As for John’s last comment: he’d better not sleep too deeply or he might wake up with bruises he knows not where they came.
This whole strip is about being able to laugh at yourself – a good quality that all of us need. In spite of the look on Elly’s face, I suspect she would have simply bonked John with the pillow, laughed, and gone to sleep – tension released with a little humor.
The grandparents must’ve taken into consideration how old Michael was before inviting him. They will take good care of him. On a scale of 1-10 for John’s insults to Elly this only ranks about a 2. He won’t have to sleep on the couch for this but she will turn around and give him the cold shoulder. Or remind him that he was probably not that easy for his parents to raise either.

Re: Item 2. John was not defending his son. He was agreeing with her and stating that the grandparents are able to deal with him.
