I voted for Republicans in the 80s and 90s. There have been good ideas and policies that the Rs presented to Ds and compromises took place to create policies a nation could get behind. It is important that a nation have more than one party and it would be even better if we had several. It’s interesting how we vote for leaders now. The Rs make us upset so everyone runs to the D side of the boat and the boat tilts too far left(port) so we run back to the R side(starboard), but then we run back to the D side, then to the R. We are allowing them to manipulate us into rocking our own boat and we are so frantic, we don’t see that it’s about to capsize the ship of state.I miss John Warner, Frank Lugar, Olympia Snow, and other moderate Republicans. We need moderate republicans and democrats. The loss of either of them would leave a power vacuum in our nation the likes of what happened in Venezuela when the opposition party to Hugo Chavez refused to participate and Mr. Chavez and his party took total control and changed all of the rules. Whether or not one liked Mr. Chavez, it is the example of one party rule that is important here. What is worst is that in creating this wall between civil debate and compromise in the Congress, our leaders have set an example of uncivil behavior and divisive politics between us, the citizens and neighbors of the USA. In Africa, the elephant is endangered because of the wealth ivory tusks provide. Meat is left behind while ivory is carried away. The body is ignored while the wealth and life of the creature is sacrificed for the sake of greed. Dems are not much better, but… because MOST Ds err on the side of individual rights… they are doing a little better. We have debts and deficits that must be addressed. We have infrastructure and internal security issues involving out power grids and cyber networks that need attention. There is a lot more for us to resolve. One party is NOT going to do the job. They will be too busy cementing their holds on power.Respectfully,C.

Principles like boot licking (tax breaks for the rich), hypocracy (Christians who cut funding for the poor), and hatred (Steve King and his immigration amendments).
At one time the Republican Party was a party of Principle. Abe Lincoln got elected in part on their principled opposition to slavery.
Now consider the transition of the modern Republican party from Hoover through Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush (I), Bush (II), and the likes of Tom DeLay, Rick Renzi, Karl Rove, Mitt Romney, etc.

By the bye, I have often been pegged as a liberal. I have no children of my own, by choice. I do not ask for anyone to pay my way. You must be speaking about every other liberal in the world; I’m sure I am the ONLY exception to your rule.

And your posts give credence to RT’s assertion that we are being divided in order to divert our attentions from what is important. I recognize that you can unite people by giving them a common enemy, and both parties have done well at forming an image of “the enemy” that bears very little resemblance to the truth.
