Having said that, I am a bit of an anarchist when it comes to words. I’ve taught English, in all grades, including ESL students. But I love, and even revel in slang..It’s the future language living now…I used to teach in Benton Harbor, MI…..The slang I heard six years ago is just starting to be used by the larger culture, Jus’ way is, man,

Lack of usage of proper grammar and spelling now a days is my biggest pet peeve. I guess I’m getting old. The way this younger generation talks drives me crazy. And forget Twitter, it’ll never happen with me.

But it’s “Publish or perish” in the field of Academia, so although they’re not getting rich off of needless revised editions, it is helping their bottomline by keeping their jobs, status, etc.

I find it ironic that in this day and age, in which you can instantly communicate with anyone, anywhere and at any time, is when communications are abbreviated the most…

Academia is “publish or perish” because we are rarely paid for what we publish, we publish in order to get pay raises and permanent jobs. The majority of what we publish is read only by other academics. The textbook industry (elementary and higher ed) is driven by publishers.

I have NEVER sent a text message on my phone, and, quite frankly, I have NO idea how to do it.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>For years, even when I had a cell phone with text capabilities, I resisted. Finally, I came to the realization that for very short messages, particularly business ones ( ie. the check bounced ) it was very useful. And while I try to avoid abbreviations, I have found texting to be a valuable tool. I DO NOT TWEET !

I take great care to use proper spelling, syntax and grammar in my tweets, and consider it a challenge to convey complete worthwhile thoughts in 140 characters or less. Usually.

Danae should learn a new song.“Its the End of the World as we know it,And I feel fine.”I was watching an NFL story (which is bad enough) the jock was reading or at least looking at Shakespeare. He remarked “Man this dude was using Ebonics before it was cool.” ????? I just sighed.

I have found texting to be useful in certain circumstances, but those aren’t common. I can go days at a time without sending a text message.

I haven’t got the slightest desire to do Twitter.

Speaking of grammar and it’s proper use, why do so many have difficulty with the use of the words, their, there and, they’re? Your and you’re as well. It’s not rocket surgery or brain science, or is the other way around. Sometimes I’m not the brightest knife or sharpest crayon :)

I’m kinda surprised that nobody has posted using text type lingo…

Linguist, yeah, a lot of people don’t like slang I think they’re booger brains…….

masterskrain, most academics insist on APA style writing. American Psychological Association style. Cutsie text abbreviations (and slang) is not acceptable….

Nabuquduriuzhur: Under the traditional contract, the author gets 10% of the retail price, the publisher 50%, and the bookstore 40%. In the case of Texas public school texts, the author gets 0% unless agrees to the fictionalizing changes ordered by the State Board of Education. Try to do something about that (like run for the Board) and you will probably never see print again, not even the bare mention of your name.

I know who’s got time for that, Danae. The “proles” of George Orwell’s “1984” would welcome that with open arms — none of that “Newspeak” horse-hockey.

I think Lucy forgot to add “words more than two syllables long” to the list. Red Green was right, computers aren’t progress; it’s a return to the days of people in caves pounding on drums to send messages.
