I’d agree that all those books were good. But I thought that the Hobbit was written for a lower age group of reader. The LOTR trilogy was to me more adult.
Hmmm… I read all four of those Tolkien books when I was a teenager in the late seventies and early eighties. Honestly can’t remember much about them, but I will say that the three LOTR movies were entertaining. I haven’t seen The Hobbit, though. I am not too interested in seeing that one, but my sister really enjoyed it.…Not everyone likes the same stuff. How boring that would be.
There’s a lot of truth to that. Tolkien had submitted what he had several times over 20 years for publication, knowing that it was nowhere near ready. He must have been hoping that an acceptance would spur him on. But he spent his life tinkering with the details and could never bring it all together as he’d like. So son Christopher was faced with the daunting task of assembling decades of different drafts, overviews, outlines and whatnot- some of it very hard to read, (his father’s handwriting got worse the faster he wrote.)

I hope they never make a movie of the Silmarrilion. That was tedious in the extreme.

My memory of the early 70s is fading, but I thought The Hobbit was shorter than any of the Ring trilogy. I’ll leave boring up to others.
