Transcript:
MONDAY Holly: If I re-wrote the paper, could I get PARTIAL credit, Ms. Wingit? Ms. Wingit: You cheated. Why should I do that? Holly: Because you're a dedicated teacher who deserves better from her students? Ms. Wingit: Did your mom tell you to say that? Holly: No...I made it up on the fly. Ms. Wingit: TOLD YOU you were smart. 10 pages, 3 days, 1/2 credit. Holly: HOORAY Holly: I can't believe I'm cheering for homework.

We all know what’s going to happen, . . . It’s 8:00 PM on the third day and she is panicking and staring blankly at page one.
We’ve all been there! Curse you Jan Eliot!!

No. “If I write the paper . . . .” She can’t rewrite something she hasn’t written.

True….just wait until you are employed in a high paying job and try that…something about a paycheck got my intrest in doing a job on time better than a grade.

It’s called “gotcha!”. Holly IS getting smart! All she has to do now is “rewrite” the “old” paper and just remove the offending headers and hand that in. As I recall, Ms. Wingit did not actually read Holly’s paper, all Wingit did was flip through the pages and saw the headers on each page, then gave it back to Holly. If Holly edits the paper to remove the headers she’ll be home free!!

No, no, no, no, no. At least give her a fail on the paper. This way she gets away with it. I know this is a comic strip, but my son was in a similar situation, but he admitted his wrongdoing immediately and only got an F for the test (he was trying to use a calculator on an AP math test, which he didn’t really need). If he had tried to shift the blame, he would have flunked the class. And I was in complete agreement with the teacher.

I am surprise at Ms. Wingit for allowing Holly more time when a deadline comes and go should be no retake. I know a comic strip. Holly needs to learn. Does not happen in college.

Maybe this time she will remove the name of the author off of the header

@ Kab;
Ms. Wingit got no ‘attitude’ so she gave a little ‘latitude’.. It’s all part of the teaching process. Holly learned something about herself AND the world right there.(p.s.) stay warm out there in Kansas, and do good on YOUR tests, too !

Just actually do the paper this time, Holly.

In Holly’s case, having to do the work is a harder lesson than getting a “0”. That’s why the teacher is allowing it. She still only gets 1/2 credit. If Holly manages to pull out a “C” and the paper was worth 100 pts of her grade, she will only be getting 35 points (an F) for 10 pages of writing…AND she will have learned the subject matter. Even in the unlikely event that she gets 100% on the paper, she still only gets 50 pts (an F)…it’s just better for her final grade in the class than not doing it at all.

I know Holly.

Wouldn’t half credit still be an F ? Half of 100 is 50, a failing grade by any standard.

Maybe it’s just as well; there really is no short cut to studying, or doing the work yourself.

You’re cheering homework, because it’s a worser fate than your mom
