Lincoln had a very thoughtful, open mind. The current GOP. Not so much.

The current Republican Party has essentially switched places with the Democratic Party of 1865.

Same problem – popular in the South and some of the Midwest, detested in the rest of the country for supporting insurrection, attacking minorities, highly dependent on votes of white racists, making every possible effort to discourage voting. And McConnell is fine with that, and so is Trump.

Either they find some real leadership quickly, or they’ll suffer the same fate, shut away from the levers of power for the next 60 years.

No, even if the leaders of the Republican Party might have reanimated Lincoln’s corpse, what they would have then would not be Lincoln, as his essence — his “soul” — is no longer in that mortal form. His soul resides in his immortal words, that greatly contradict what the Republicans now stand for.

Krugman: The Republican Party is stuck, probably irreversibly, in a doom loop of bizarro.

…On Tuesday Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, who has said that Donald Trump’s role in fomenting the insurrection was impeachable, voted for a measure that would have declared a Trump trial unconstitutional because he’s no longer in office. (Most constitutional scholars disagree.)

On Thursday Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader — who still hasn’t conceded that Joe Biden legitimately won the presidency, but did declare that Trump “bears responsibility” for the attack on Congress — visited Mar-a-Lago, presumably to make amends.

In other words, the G.O.P.’s national leadership, after briefly flirting with sense, has surrendered to the fantasies of the fringe. Cowardice rules.

I would differ with Dr. Krugman on one thing. For some it is not cowardice — it’s calculated.

Charles P. Pierce came to the same conclusion years ago. The metaphor he uses is the party is suffering from the prion disease caught by eating infected brains, and it was under Ronald Reagan that the party ate the brains.

The GOP is stuck in a feedback loop. Between extreme gerrymandering and right wing media that thrives on division, disinformation, and outright CT, the party can only keep moving deeper into Crazytown. They are a full-blown right wing authoritarian cult. Crazy is a feature, not a bug.

    Exhibit A: Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The Lincoln Project is [perhaps] the “Neo” that has escaped the MAGA/Qanon Matrix and is able to see things as they truly are. We — in the [not always nice] real-world — need to put an end to the malicious, seditious, conspiracy-driven matrix and work together to solve real, NOT imaginary problems.

Adults must be able to tell the difference between politically-contrived fairy-tales and real-life if the planet is to survive.

I picture Trump down at Mar-A-lardo like a pharaoh as his cultists come down to pay their fearless leader in exile homage. Unlike Lincoln, Trump sits on his golden toilet as he receives his minions.

If Lincoln were alive today it would be good to remember that he was a pretty darned good wrestler and could whoop butt. Let him loose on the party and watch him clean house.

Not for a long time. Those are the Democrats now since 1965.

How did the party of Lincoln become the party of racists, Q-anon conspiracy theorists, science deniers, and Christianist kooks?

Remember when the same disgusting admin who sent their terrorists to break into our Capitol and “hang Pence” put a line of fascist troops on the Lincoln memorial to protect it from BLM who had no intention of hurting it?

I’m starting to think it’s more than both parties switched, as much as the Republican’s have decided to champion what was the worst of both parties.

The party today is nothing…Nothing…like the party of Lincoln. It is not even the party of Nixon who got the Clean Air and Clean Water legislation passed and signed into law.
