They didn’t leave Hobbes at home!
Arrrrggghhh! That is EXACTLY like most of the women I grew up with. Imagine growing up in a state that literally has fields of wildflowers in the spring and early summer, more than 70% public lands of which most is forested— and they just wanted to party and get drunk.
You just don’t get it, do you, Calvin? I’ll skip a TV show for a beautiful sunrise any time.
Good Morning, Marg, Mike & ♠Lonewolf♠!
Calvin ,that is the tv, tv of life
Some people just can’t handle the all that peace and quiet and sheer beauty, they’re just too uncomfortable in their own company, getting drunk becomes a distraction. Very sad, give me a desert island any day!
I choose the Earthsea Trilogy, a radio and a machete.
No kidding, Calvin. You are missing a great TV show but I think you would have felt terrible if you had missed this live show.
Is that a sunrise or sunset????
Either way, that is WAY better than TV!!!!!!!!!!!!
But he might like sunrise (guess the scattered sun rays are an indication of sunrise) on TV.
Folks don’t forget that Dad woke Calvin up @ 6:30 AM. I’m almost certain it’s sunrise.
That has to be a sunset, Calvin would NEVER be up in time to see a sunrise.
SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED has never had her eyes blinded by a sunrise. Why when you are basked with the eternal golden glow of network programing 24/7?
It’s a gud drawing……….
Bill watterson does got a talent……….I mean I know everybody…….knows tht………
^Doesn’t hurt to say it, though.
One of the biggest problems with Calvin is that he’s so much like so many of us! Well, not GoComics readers, of course, We skip TV in favor of healthier pursuits such as the internet.
However, I’m up by nature before sunrise every morning. I get up and out early enough not see stars and sunrise. It is a special treat better left to those who appreciate it.
Calvin, that’s kinda like drinking the simply amazing, mind-blowing, in-season, fresh-squeezed, orange juice I had in one of the best restaurants in Jerusalem, nay, in all Israel, and saying, “I’ll bet I’m missing some great fountain drinks flavored with high fructose corn syrup.”
Calvin, ya can’t TIVO real life.
While we still had milk cows, I used to say that I kicked the sun out of bed in the morning and tucked it into bed at night. Many LONG days. But the rewards were without parallel. Looking up at the constellations and shooting stars. Hearing the shrill call of a mother killdeer well before sunrise and the cry of a bobcat that stands the hair on the back of your neck on end. Plus watching the sunrise from the barn window. It all helped me stay connected to mother earth.
This over tv. Any day!
You’ll understand in time, Calvin.
G’Morning Marg, Mike & Grog!
Definitely this over TV any day sunrise or sunset. Nothing special about TV except Calvin doesn’t want to be where he is…..
If this was moved to present day, Calvin would not be missing any great TV shows.
As a mother of 5, I know that little kids get up EARLY, and watch TV, especially on Saturdays. No sleeping late. So it definitely is a sunrise.
Reminds me of my grandson finding some buddies when we camped at Algonquin Park in Ontario. They completely ignored the scenery and put their heads down playing Gameboy. Their Dad thought that would make a good commercial.
I woke up to a spectacular orange sunrise this morning: is that a sailor’s delight or warning, because it wasn’t red?
Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.
Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.
Along the same line…I love the seashore and it constantly amazes me that some people might travel hundreds even thousands of mile to spend time at the shore. What’s the first thing they do after they slather on sunscreen? Turn on the radio! I’ve even seen small portable tv’s! What am I missing?
Morning has broken…
it’s sunset. how many tv shows that kid likes are on when the sun rises?
This is a strip that BEGS TO BE COLORED but then I realized that I was coloring it in with my mind - just like radio!
I agree, Nighthawks, not many TV shows at sunrise. It’s gotta be sunset.
Calvin’s to young to appreciate true beauty.
Dennis: “This is a lot more fun than living in our dumb old house.”
Why can’t Calvin be like Dennis the Menace?
Sunrise, sunset…swiftly fly the days…..or so says the song. As the days continue to fly by I realize that I love this strip in part because Watterson really captures the best and worst in all of us, and sometimes in just one frame. I always see it first thing in my morning so my day begins with a thoughtful commentary on life. A little reality show, all for me! Thanks, Bill, for “labor-ing” on these for so long.
“Arrrrggghhh! That is EXACTLY like most of the women I grew up with.”
I don’t know who I feel the sorriest for: You. Or the women.
Good morning all I have to agree for this strip color would be fantastic seeing all the growth. I think deep down Calvin and more Hobbes is enjoying the setting of sun. This would have to be sunset. My kids never got up early stayed up late during summer.
We live in town and though houses crowd the neighborhood I was on glider with text book watching night decend. Outside the HWY buzzing considerin night was quite.
If this were a current strip Calvin would have his gameboy or cell phone to distract him from the beauty around him.
Everyone should at some time in their life go some place where it is pitch black, no city lights or farm lights, not even a candle around, and look at the stars. Once I looked out the window of rented house in MA during mid night time and the big dipper looked like I could touch it. So close it filled the picture window. Will never forget that sight as long as I live.
Hello everybody! It’s got to be sunset, cause the sun gets
up REAL early in the summer and it was up when Calvin’s
father woke him up, thus………………….. In any case, sun-
rise or sunset don’t mean a thing to him on this trip :-))
Have a real good sunny day.
Whine, whine, whine!
Hello, Hobbes!! Good to see you. So what are YOUR thoughts on this lovely…evening??
Beautiful drawing, too….I always love sunsets….
The sunrise holds its glory only for those who are awake.
H. D. T.
makes me laugh
While I HAVE been up early enough to see the sunrise - and there have been some SPECTACULAR ones I’m glad I saw - My NATURAL wake-up time is about 9:30 AM EST or so. So, while I may miss a few sunrises, I DO get to see the sunsets… and the moonglow…. It had to be moonglow, way up in the blue… that moonglow gave me you.,..
the facts are in.its a sunset!
I vote for sunrise - if it was sunset, the birds in the foreground of the picture would already have gone to their nests.
Shut up & enjoy the beauty of a sunset kid..
Sunset, Calvin wouldn’t be up for sunrise.
I think Calvin’s unappreciation of the beauty around him in this instance is the typical M.O. of a little kid. I know I never started appreciating such things until I got older and wiser. Plus, Calvin’s been made to go camping against his will, thus the attitude.
He he he. Reminds me of the clueless of an ad some years back: guy out running, comes to this wonderful vista and stops, not to admire it, but to pull out his eGadget and text someone…
There are no great TV shows at sunrise.
Fans dont try and pretend its sunrise Calvin would not be up and dressed for a sunrise.
Some day in the distant future he will close his eyes and remember the friendship of Hobbes, the colour of the sky, sound of the birds, and the smell of evening air.
This moment is for life, every where in the world he is.
I have moments like this.
Other strips (many of them) show Calvin getting up VERY early to watch TV, especially on Saturdays. On the other hand, he also watches TV in the afternoon and early evening instead of doing his homework, when he can.
fastvega & everyone else, have you already forgotten this?
his dad out on the lake fishing in a canoe in the dark?i dont think so.
Yah Calvin u probably are
thanks tigger, enjoyed it
The trouble with nature is we take it for granted!!!!!!!!
And it’s sunset as Calvin would NOT be up at that hour. And it is not cold!
@ Mythreesons i agree with you about looking at stars in the pitch dark. when we had the big blackout of 2004 our whole family went to visit my parents to make sure they were okay. (naturally, they were doing better than any of us were.) my then 13 year old niece asked me if i knew any of the constellations, and it was only then that i realized she’d never really seen them before due to all the light pollution. today, i can drive for 45 minutes out of town and still not be able to see anything near the horizon due to the lights of the city polluting the sky. it’s a shame.
As I live on Lake Ontario @ my summer home and we sit
almost every nite out front to watch the sunset, if it’s not cloudy, of course it’s SUNRISE, NO BIRDS OF ANY TYPE
ARE FLYING, ESPECIALLY-SEAGULLS ARE NESTING
Sorry commenters, but 20yrs now –
THERE WATCHING SUNRISE CALVIN & Hobbs
no Calvin you’re not missing any, TV is a vast wasteland
**Good morning Marg!
Good morning Fran and Kizzzy!
Good Morning L’Wolf!
Good Morning Grog!**
Well, it’s morning somewhere
Sometimes a comic is just a comic
sweetbill-I beg to differ-my favorite pastime is just after the sun sets and watching the swallows diving thru the air chasing mosquitos-not all birds are tucked away early
The older I get … the more I hate watching television of any kind! A beautiful sunset is definitely better than anything shown on t.v. these days!!!
Best sunrise I have ever seen in my life was watching the sun come up over the sea of Gallilee in Israel. I was too tired and out of it to remember to get out my camera and photograph it. Duhhhhhh…..
Its worth it, Calvin.
It is certainly sunset. There are no good TV shows at sunrise.
Wow… Bill Watterson is amazing…
1080p has nothing on that.
