Some people just can’t handle the all that peace and quiet and sheer beauty, they’re just too uncomfortable in their own company, getting drunk becomes a distraction. Very sad, give me a desert island any day!

I choose the Earthsea Trilogy, a radio and a machete.

^Doesn’t hurt to say it, though.

One of the biggest problems with Calvin is that he’s so much like so many of us! Well, not GoComics readers, of course, We skip TV in favor of healthier pursuits such as the internet.

However, I’m up by nature before sunrise every morning. I get up and out early enough not see stars and sunrise. It is a special treat better left to those who appreciate it.

Calvin, that’s kinda like drinking the simply amazing, mind-blowing, in-season, fresh-squeezed, orange juice I had in one of the best restaurants in Jerusalem, nay, in all Israel, and saying, “I’ll bet I’m missing some great fountain drinks flavored with high fructose corn syrup.”

Calvin, ya can’t TIVO real life.

While we still had milk cows, I used to say that I kicked the sun out of bed in the morning and tucked it into bed at night. Many LONG days. But the rewards were without parallel. Looking up at the constellations and shooting stars. Hearing the shrill call of a mother killdeer well before sunrise and the cry of a bobcat that stands the hair on the back of your neck on end. Plus watching the sunrise from the barn window. It all helped me stay connected to mother earth.

Along the same line…I love the seashore and it constantly amazes me that some people might travel hundreds even thousands of mile to spend time at the shore. What’s the first thing they do after they slather on sunscreen? Turn on the radio! I’ve even seen small portable tv’s! What am I missing?

Sunrise, sunset…swiftly fly the days…..or so says the song. As the days continue to fly by I realize that I love this strip in part because Watterson really captures the best and worst in all of us, and sometimes in just one frame. I always see it first thing in my morning so my day begins with a thoughtful commentary on life. A little reality show, all for me! Thanks, Bill, for “labor-ing” on these for so long.

Good morning all I have to agree for this strip color would be fantastic seeing all the growth. I think deep down Calvin and more Hobbes is enjoying the setting of sun. This would have to be sunset. My kids never got up early stayed up late during summer. We live in town and though houses crowd the neighborhood I was on glider with text book watching night decend. Outside the HWY buzzing considerin night was quite.

Everyone should at some time in their life go some place where it is pitch black, no city lights or farm lights, not even a candle around, and look at the stars. Once I looked out the window of rented house in MA during mid night time and the big dipper looked like I could touch it. So close it filled the picture window. Will never forget that sight as long as I live.

Hello everybody! It’s got to be sunset, cause the sun gets up REAL early in the summer and it was up when Calvin’s father woke him up, thus………………….. In any case, sun- rise or sunset don’t mean a thing to him on this trip :-)) Have a real good sunny day.

While I HAVE been up early enough to see the sunrise - and there have been some SPECTACULAR ones I’m glad I saw - My NATURAL wake-up time is about 9:30 AM EST or so. So, while I may miss a few sunrises, I DO get to see the sunsets… and the moonglow…. It had to be moonglow, way up in the blue… that moonglow gave me you.,..

I think Calvin’s unappreciation of the beauty around him in this instance is the typical M.O. of a little kid. I know I never started appreciating such things until I got older and wiser. Plus, Calvin’s been made to go camping against his will, thus the attitude.

Fans dont try and pretend its sunrise Calvin would not be up and dressed for a sunrise. Some day in the distant future he will close his eyes and remember the friendship of Hobbes, the colour of the sky, sound of the birds, and the smell of evening air. This moment is for life, every where in the world he is. I have moments like this.

Other strips (many of them) show Calvin getting up VERY early to watch TV, especially on Saturdays. On the other hand, he also watches TV in the afternoon and early evening instead of doing his homework, when he can.

    Split decision.

@ Mythreesons i agree with you about looking at stars in the pitch dark. when we had the big blackout of 2004 our whole family went to visit my parents to make sure they were okay. (naturally, they were doing better than any of us were.) my then 13 year old niece asked me if i knew any of the constellations, and it was only then that i realized she’d never really seen them before due to all the light pollution. today, i can drive for 45 minutes out of town and still not be able to see anything near the horizon due to the lights of the city polluting the sky. it’s a shame.
