The Wizard of Id has been enchanting audiences since 1964, but the real wizards behind this comic classic were artist Brant Parker and writer Johnny Hart.
The pair began paving the path to the Kingdom of Id in 1950, when Parker, a staff artist for the Binghamton Press in upstate New York, was asked to judge a high school art contest. Among the entrants was a teenager by the name of Johnny Hart, whose work so impressed Parker that he arranged a meeting.

Not as long as those who approve those wars don’t have to go!

Historically, we have usually had to fight because someone hated us for our mere existence or wanted what we had. The Barbary Pirates captured our people (and Europe’s) and sold them into slavery in Africa in the late 1700s. The Mexicans thought we’d be a pushover and we won despite starting the war with a badly trained and badly equipped standing army of 17,000 non-veterans to their 90,000 well- equipped and experienced troops. Japan didn’t want us in the Pacific, so they tried to take us out, despite our having a presence in the Pacific since the late 1700s. The Taliban took our help in Afghanistan and then turned on us because we were not muslims. (These are only a few examples.)

Uh, not all wars involve Americans. And we started a few ourselves. Let’s just honor the veterans without being sanctimonious about it.

Nine more Aussie names were unveiled today on the Afghanistan roll at the National War Memorial in Canberra, Australia.

That argument is both one sided and over simplified. Lets just remember all the lives (ALL of them not just our own troops’) which have been lost in senseless wars over the centuries.
