You don’t know, Jack75487! Read Madison’s Notes on the Constitutional Convention and other communication at that period. The second amendment was to provide a means of national defense with a minimal standing army, which Americans feared far more than any invading nation (with good reason). As Eldridge Gerry so eloquently put it, “Standing committees and standing armies are equal threats to liberty.”
A militia is essentially defensive only. You can’t try to invade the world with part-time soldiers. Switzerland comes the closest to what they envisioned and in WW-II, the Abwher said invading Switzerland would cost Germany 60 divisions – in casualties – and what would they get for it? A destroyed hydroelectric potential and dead precision machinists! The Swiss were declared the official neutral referee and left alone.
I have a couple of those Second Amendment guns: flintlocks. One shot, a big cloud of smoke telling where you are, 30 seconds (minimum) to reload; there is no way they can be used for another Long Island Railroad, Killeen Luby’s, Murrah Building, Columbine High, Virginia Tech, Fort Hood, or Aurora movie, etc. Of course, rogue militia can still create a Kent State. And one person can still reproduce enough Ford’s Theater, Buffalo exposition, or Dealy Plaza to satisfy your blood lust.
