You are right about NAFTA. The idea was, and still is, that the third world countries that take all our jobs will eventually have workplace safeguards and other advantages that unions brought to our workplaces in the US, whether as a result of unions or other factors.
And eventually, all workers will have some minimum safeguards and reasonable wages as a result. The question, of course, is how long is it going to take to achieve parity. And the answer: longer than any of us wants it to.
