Any catastrophe you can walk away from is still a catastrophe. However, that apron she’s wearing may finally come in useful. The question is whether a raygun blast set to stun can work as a local anesthetic.

Going back and reading last minute comments from a couple days ago…
Two days ago, Molon Labe said: “Ok, assuming an acceleration of 9.8 meters/sec^2, a seven second drop would yield a drop of 102.9 meters, or 337.59775 feet. Call it 338 feet to round it up. That’s not the 500 to 700 feet some people have been suggesting.”

Well, its just been me saying that, but I’m not sure where you’re getting your answer from.
    distance = (g * t^2) / 2
    if we use g = 32.1740 ft/s^2 (9.8m/s^2)

    Time Distance (feet)
    0 …. 0
    1 …. 16.1
    2 …. 64.3
    3 …. 144.8
    4 …. 257.4
    5 …. 402.1
    6 …. 579.1
    7 …. 788.2

My answers have been verified by: http://www.gravitycalc.com/
(At 7 seconds, the object will have a velocity of 153 mph, which is still significantly below the terminal velocity in air on earth of 200 mph.)

Not surprising since Holly has had a poorer than usual diet for the last month.
Takes more than a few days of bed rest to recover.

Rethinking – break out the dittos now. Cover the area. Treat the arm and administer painkillers. Then camp out in the pod until Holly is ready to travel.

What you have there is terminal velocity of a falling object. This is about launching up a mass to a certain height or in this case at least escaping the cap. So begin to move it would have to reach 11.2 kilometers per second just to begin to move upwards basically breaking the hold of gravity. Now to reach space that velocity has to be held or exceeded. This 11.2 kps is simply getting enough upwards thrust. Once done the thrust drops to zero and down comes Holly and Wally. Now their speed dropping your formula here comes into play. They did not reach a great height before coming back down. Just enough to clear.
Wiki shows a neat event. A Saturn 5 reaches an escape velocity of 8 nanometers per year through constant acceleration. When the mass of the Saturn 5 reaches the Andromeda galaxy the earth would have recoiled 500 meters in response.
    I thought that was interesting.

“What you have there is terminal velocity of a falling object.”

The above numbers were for the grenade falling down the shaft. I don’t know ballistics, so I don’t know how to correlate the pod’s upward motion to the strength of the exploding grenade. From the panel yesterday, the pod looked like it could easily reach a height of 30 feet above the ground. Even at 16 feet, it could be enough to break an arm or wrist if you don’t know which side it’s going to land on, or if you’re tumbling inside the pod at the time of impact. I doubt that you’d want it to go any higher up than that.

Discounting variances in anatomy, she’s holding what would be described as her humorous proximal to the midpoint. One of the easier limbs to care for when you don’t have access to a hospital. In many cases sling & swath keeping the affected wrist high will allow the bone to heal well- even without a cast. As Three Steps Over Japan noted, that apron’s gonna be handy.
