Sure. How many millions of dollars can you generate for the school while you’re there?

“for the school”? Don’t you mean “for the athletic program”?

College players are not the only people who do unpaid grunt work for the betterment of their program. Almost every major when I went to school required an unpaid internship to graduate. It’s called “paying your dues”.
The difference, of course, is that I was allowed to hold a part-time job—as college players are not.

Most of the money generated by the athletic department goes right back into the athletic department. Very little (if any at all, if the most recent budget at my wife’s school s an indication of the norm) goes towards the school itself or salaries. Anything taken in will go back to recruitment programs, advertising, uniforms, and field/facility maintenance. A fair exchange, but many of these and the coaches’ salaries and bonuses are also taken from the schools’ general budget as well, making the athletics a drain on the school for the sake of exposure.
My own undergraduate school was sued after an alumnus willed $10 million for a science scholarship program. When the daughter came to ask how the program was set up, she found out they used $5 million of it to redo the basketball court, and won a $20 million dollar lawsuit.

Only if you generate a lot of money for the school.

And yet, if you use common sense, work hard, budget save and plan, you too can become debt free. Like me
