Cell phones based on the Iridium satellite constellation DO communicate all the way to orbit from anywhere on the planet, but it’s true they’re a bit larger than regular cell phones. This year, that is.

I think they were made extra bulky so that they wouldn’t break in hostile environments, plus they had everlasting batteries.
