    I think they were made extra bulky so that they wouldn’t break in hostile environments, plus they had everlasting batteries.

    Let’s see — A screen large enough to read text off of as opposed to icons that have to be proportionately huge to be seen — A case large enough to house an antenna long enough for reception over much larger distances than a cell phone… The size seems logical enough to me.

    Cell phones based on the Iridium satellite constellation DO communicate all the way to orbit from anywhere on the planet, but it’s true they’re a bit larger than regular cell phones. This year, that is.

    It is not mere coincidence that many cell phone designs mimic the communicators of Star Trek. The History Channel aired a program called “Star Trek Tech” which showed direct correlations between devices used in the original TV series and modern technological devices, including cellular phones. Fascinating…
