One thing I’ll say for cats is that they ARE ‘clever’ enough to ‘convince’ people that their cussed ‘independence’ is the result of their cussed ‘independence’, when in fact it’s just that their brains aren’t smart enough to be able to do otherwise!
My Norwegian Elkhound lives in the high desert in southern California, but he just LOVES snow even though he’s never been out of southern California. If it snows here, he goes out in the back yard and rolls around on his back in the snow because (to him) it feels so good!
@BigChiefDesotaCrosses between wolves and dogs are dangerous. Wolves respect humans, dogs don’t and when you combine the two it’s possible to get a very dangerous animal. Athabascans took pups from wolf dens with the female wolves there. Univ of Minn’s Dr. U. S. Seal told me that many years ago when I asked about crossing a husky with a wolf.
I’ve always thought that we humans ascribe intelligence to animals based on how well they can be trained to suit our needs. I like dogs, cats, and pigs [pork fat rules!], but if you release a pack of bad dogs [wolves, dingos, etc.], a few wild boar, and a couple of big cats [mountain lion, cougar, etc.] in a forest, what you would find the next day is a couple of well fed cats.
Answer: Wolves could be domesticated to hunt and bring in food. Foxes aren’t stong enough to catch anything much bigger than a mouse – and possibly a chicken. Back in the 50s when nearly everyone (in the country) had a chicken house, foxes were enemies. Now, they are protected because they keep the rodent population down.
We practically had to plow a path to get one of our Shelties to go out. The other one preferred to sleep in snowdrifts. He must have had Arctic fox genes…he even looked like one.
Finally! found the end of the posts. Took awhile to get here. Had to read a fair bit.Ok, here goes….Kittens will be litterbox trained by their mom. Otherwise, the other mommy (human) has to train the kitten.Cats will learn to use the toilet. And flush!Pigs will learn to use the litterbox. If pigs had the ability, ie the legs, they would learn to use the toilet just like the cat.I have met a wolf/german shepherd cross. More wolf than shepherd. She was a softie. And must have been deaf because she put up with all the cymbals, bells, singing at a Parade of Chariots. .the snow must have been too wet for Wolfie. He has his human well trained. .As to which is more intelligent? Guide dogs and P.A.D.S. dogs are chosen because of their personality, adaptability and trainability. (and excuse any spelling)

At what point did wolf become a dog I wonder?

Dogs are not that far removed from wolves… You can domesticate a wolf and it acts just like a dog.

At least he got the monkey off his back.

Re wolves, see this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTTuiE1_Oe8&feature=related
And no cat or even chimp can come even close to the intelligence of a dog.

Careful now. When you’re eye to eye with a pig, do you know what level you’re at?

Wolves generally live in cold climates such as Alaska where there’s snow. Look at all those great pictures of them in snow covered plains.

Any dog becomes feral if it lives outside alone long enough.

Humankind has a lot to learn from animals. They seem much smarter than they’re given credit for.
