You don’t get the point. At his age it’s less argumentative to just say “Yes, dear”. It took my mother-in-law a year to pick out the correct ‘shade’ of white paint for the dining room, and even after the room was painted sh didn’t like it.
After his first few attempts to dress himself decades ago and hearing “is that what you’re wearing?”, I’m sure he resigned himself to sleeping in an extra 15 minutes while his new personal dresser laid out his uniform of the day. Probably learned the right answer to “does this dress make me look fat?” early on, too. (Answer: “No, dear, the DRESS does not make you look fat.”)
My dad is in his 60s and my mom still picks out his clothes for work and special occasions. The few times he ventures out in “casual wear” he picked out himself, the result is not good.
In my experience people are different and gender doesn’t have much to do with it. Some women overthink everything, some men do. It’s annoying when people (like Mr.Crane & some of the commenters) lump entire groups of people together as “all the same.” It’s just not true, people are much more complicated & individually nuanced than that.

Maybe he is like Bing Crosby, who was color blind, and had to have people pick out his clothes so he would look ok when he went out
