Actually, making voting mandatory might make the process less suspectible to the advertising money influence. So would eliminating jerrymandering (making voting districts determined on population and geographic terms alone) and providing public financing only for elections. I also like the idea of making voting day be on the weekend.
Yes, it would be anti- and un-american,because the right to vote means that if the candidates are underserving of your franchise then you should not be forced ro endorse either one.
If all the candidates are undeserving of my vote, why isn’t there a line with “none of the above” on it? And taking that a step further, if “none of the above” gets the most votes, shouldn’t there have to be another election with a different set of candidates in it?
Most jurisdictions do allow write-in candidates, so you aren’t forced to endorse any candidate you feel is undeserving. I voted for my Dad in the Bush-Mondale contest.
They don’t want you to vote, because if only 3 people vote, they just have to convince their wife. I don’t want you to vote if you’re paying more attention to Kardashians. (If I spelled that wrong for ignorance of the clan, I wish I knew even less of them.)

I have to say Ireland has recently had the most wonderfully surreal and entertaining Presidential election. What with one candidate claiming assassination attempts and the front runner (supposedly an independent) defeated because he was linked to the country’s largest party it was fantastic. Although I did not vote for our new president I’m not sorry he won.
Thought of this too late, but it is an electoral tactic to go negative in order to suppress the vote. Isn’t defeating the purpose of democracy when the politicians are working hard to chose not to vote? I say, take this tactic away and make voting mandatory.

Belgium has mandatory voting. After the last election, the parliament was so divided it took them more than a year to form a government.
