I heard that even when people learn that a myth is debunked, people are more prone to remember the myth than the debunking.

When will you understand Danae that Jeffrey never likes to let a study-op (in this case to study the Red Planet) go by unused?!

Or maybe that concept is too simple?!

wndrwrthg, the range of your intellect amazes me. I remember fondly my “journeys” to Barsoom. you probably know of this site, but others may find it interesting; http://www.erbzine.com/mag15/1510.html

just finished a S M Stirling book called “In the Court of the Crimson Kings” which I found very reminiscent of the comic book adaptations I’ve read of ERB’s John Carter stories. (Sadly, I never saw the actual books.) Thought it was a decent read, if anyone cares for a recommendation.

yyyguy The original books are a great read. Start with “A Princess of Mars” (there are 11 Mars books by ERB). You can probably find them at Abebooks.com, a great source for old, used, out-of-print and collectable books.

I actually know some people like Danae who only hear what they want regardless of what you really say. Then insist on telling you their interpretation of what they heard that you actually didn’t say.

Strange how ERB’s “Tarzan” became so popular/famous, but how many people do you know familiar with Jon Carter? (PS to yyyguy - It’s “Jon”, as I recall from my childhood, which was admittedly a few years in the past)

Jon Carter of Barsoom? Never heard of him. (I didn’t have a misspent childhood, because I can’t play pool. I read. Almost anything and everything with type on it.)

And I even played Martian chess a time or two. Not a bad game, for all it’s odd rules.

Grazer, fantasy has to be more plausible than reality. It has to make sense, be coherent and, well, plausible. Reality just has to have happened.

If you don’t mind reading on the computer, ERB’s Barsoom books, the Tarzan stories, and most of his other stuff is available at The Gutenberg Project. Free.

How could a nerdish childhood spent reading possibly be misspent? Nerds have a higher average income than lots of other High School stereotypes. And definitely better fantasy lives.

elevatorman - you are absolutely correct - JOHN Carter, not Jon. As I said, it’s been a few years, and my apologies to yyyguy. I no longer have any of the Barsoom books, but I HAVE managed to hold onto two Tarzan hardbounds; The Forbidden City and The City of Gold, both from 1952 (also have 3 Penrod books from my dad, around 1920). OK, I’ll shut up now and check my facts next time.
