Not anything to brag about, and not funny, but I had to chase a truck like that once. I was lucky….I was able to catch it. Fortunately, I was only a few steps away and the door was still open. The things a guy will do when he’s tired !!
find a good place to hide guys, i think there is going to be some screaming in a few minutes
i can relate to this, when i was 15, i was sitting with my girlfriend in her parents car and she hit the shift lever (stick shift) into neutral. the car rolled across the road and into a telephone pole
In the USPS, roll-aways are grounds for immediate dismissal. Only happened to me a few times. First you get very religious ,bargaining with God. Then you look around wildly to see if anyone noticed. Then acceptance, “It wasn’t my fault,”
Calvin, take the Civil Service Exam. You’re a natural.
I had to repair a garage where the wife had driven through the back wall and into the back yard. Long story, and quite understandable. But she told me later on, “I wish Harald would get mad at me. All he does is smile and chuckle …” It works.
Good morning Marg!
Good morning Fran and Kizzzy!
Good Morning L’Wolf!
Good Morning Grog!
This is what happened to my friend. She was in the car when it started rolling, could not get it stopped once it started to move, and she leapt out as it crossed SR62 where the car…
I can just feel the PANIC that Calvin feels right now - poor kid as he thinks about what is going to happen the car and further more what he is going to have to face when his parents find out. I would not want to be in his shoes right now!
Too funny. Happened with the 2 year old next door in the car. He crawled into the open car and released the parking brake (like he’d seen his Dad do) and the car slid down the driveway. It was a nice day and the whole neighbourhood was outside chatting in the dusk. Luckily no damage to the car or the boy. Everybody jumped on the car and got it stopped before any damage was done.
I think now, twenty years later maybe his parents can laugh at it without blanching. I should forward this to himat work; he’s a firefighter.
I was out walking and last week most excitment I’ve seen in a while. Usually just a normal walking day. 1)mom has a stroler with two little ones, bigger and small both boys, 2) dad in car 3) dog outside running owner is dad 2 so dad did park his car got out and started running after the dog, dog is having a good time 4) neighbors not happy teenager driving a truck suv turns to fast hits 3 vehicles all parked and finally hit two cars back and front and his suv front frame all damaged, passanger runs home to report incident cops there.
Our (then) 4 year old son climbed into our SUV (yes, same one as yesterday’s story, with 2nd son this time) while it was parked on our driveway. For some reason, both front doors were open, and he thought they looked like wings. He decided to play “airplane” and got it into neutral. Backed all the way to the neighbor’s property line, where a barbed wire fence stopped it. We were very thankful the steering wheel wasn’t turned, or it could have been over a cliff instead! (Side property line is a loooong drop down.) All of us adults went running after the SUV, but it was rolling faster than any of us could run.
I remember working on the set of Species 2 in Tooele, Utah and watching a Hummer slowly roll itself towards a couple of half million dollar Panaflex cameras. The directors and the camera guys jumped up asap and managed to get the car from trashing anything. Between that and a helicopter that nearly hit a cherry picker with another Panaflex in it, it was a fairly uneventful evening….
maturecanadian you really need to send this to your firefighter friend!lol this happened to my daughter, her kids took the van out of gear & it rolled it right into our truck! grandpa & mom both was really unhappy! no one or thing got damaged. if the truck had not been there it would have rolled into the yard where children were playing!
Those “gdam trial lawyers” probably got the automakers to build cars so that you can’t remove the key without putting them in Park, and you can’t shift out of Park without the key. Either that, or the “durned gummint” must’ve got them to do it.
Anyway, people are safer than they were when Calvin was drawn, and there’s reasons for that.
We left our 5-pound Pomeranian in the car while we went inside a restaurant for lunch. With all of his barking and jumping around, he managed to shift the car from park to neutral and the car rolled backwards into an empty parking space. (Whew–nothing damaged!)
“Suppose I did something bad. Should I tell Dad?”
“How bad are we supposing?”
…
“Should we pretend it could be fixed?”
“If we imagined he could find the car we could pretend it might be fixed.”
…
“Que pasa senorita? I am el fugitivo!”
I was lucky enough to get to prevent this once. Living in Denver, I watched from my porch as a young women pulled to a stop (double parked) across the street from me, put her car in park, jumped out and ran into the house. She left a small child inside, who promptly wondered over and began playing with the shift lever (on the column). I was alert to the possibilities here, and watched carefully. Sure enough, he popped it out of park, and the car began rolling. I bolted after it and succeeded in getting in and stopping it before it hit anything. I have my doubts Calvin will be so lucky.
I actually love this strip because for a moment we see Hobbes step out of his stuffed animal sidekick mode. He actually becomes Calvin’s protector as he grabs him from behind and skids to a halt, yelling “It’s going to go into the road! Don’t follow it!” Hobbes may have just saved Calvin’s life.

But how does a stuffed tiger stop a runaway boy? Calvin’s fertile imagination truly transcends belief when he can make himself (via Hobbes) stop.
NashvilleMac almost 14 years ago
Frankly, this one is not Calvin’s fault. Didn’t Mom or Dad ever hear of a parking brake???
Leaving a sedan in a position where a ten-year-old can push it into an uncontrolled roll - that’s misbehaving.
