A newly opened can of surströmming has one of the most putrid food smells in the world, even stronger than similarly fermented fish dishes such as the Korean hongeohoe, the Japanese kusaya or the Icelandic hákarl.
i’d never heard of stinky tofu before (not generally a fan of chinese food) and as a resident of japan, where the tofu doesn’t have any smell at all, my first reaction was, you probably want to stay away from it if it’s stinky. thanks to last kiss, i can add another chinese dish to my list of foods to avoid… ☺
