This one was from about 2 decades ago, but it still rings true for me today: “In Wisconsin on Groundhog Day, if the groundhog sees his shadow there will be 6 more weeks of winter; if he does not, there will be 8 more weeks. If he sees Dick Cheney’s shadow, there may never be spring again.” —Jerome Van Epps
Twain supposedly said ‘everybody talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it.’ From what I read, Phil is right about 44%, which isn’t great, but is considerably better than most of the decisions made in the hog bog on the Potomac.
So when it’s dark and miserable out, and surrounded by dark and miserable people, the overcast forecast foretells of an early spring and the moods lighten.
But then the sky is bright and sunny – the vitamin D with sunshine and happiness in abundance – it’s time to cast some shade and cast some doubt into the future to make people fearful again.
Groundhogs must be sadistic masochists – or is it a masochistic sadist?
And in response to all the times that Caulfield has commented on this “made-up holiday”…it’s an actual holiday. It’s called “Candlemas.” The rodents were added later.
I’ll be watching that movie tonight. Also the original ‘Ghostbusters’ is my all time favorite movie. I once dressed up as Egon Spengler for a fan/comic convention. And I will seeing the new one next month. Thank you, Mr. Mallett for the tribute to the late and truly great Harold Ramis.

It’s an overlooked holiday where traffic safety is concerned, so Don’t drive angry!

Thanks, Jef, for chasing me to the reference material once again. You draw the thinkingest comic in newspapers!

Groundhog Day is indeed a fine movie… as Frazz clearly knows.

Upon first landing here, I saw the comic from the corner of my eye, and thought Frazz was holding a guitar!

I just watched a video with the Lay’s commercials that will be running on ABC today. Very clever marketing idea.

Imbolc blessings to us all — the beginning of Spring (northern hemisphere, anyway) and time to do some cleaning.

Hilarious, sometimes it’s what you leave out that makes it!

Let’s also give credit to Danny Rubin who wrote the original script. He even wrote a book about it (How To Write Groundhog Day).
