You are a feline with a supposedly advanced snifter. As soon as the opener pierces the can you should be able to identify pineapple over fish.

I swear that out car can tell it’s tuna before I open the can. Whenever I start to make a tuna sandwich he’s there as the can is being taken from the cupboard. He does not react this way for salmon, shrimp, crab or any other canned product.

    It’s uncanny.

I had a cat that could hear a plastic yogurt container being opened from the other side of the house, while he was sleeping. And yes, he Loved yogurt. He would climb my leg to get to it.

I’ve long wondered how cats would react to yogurt cream.

Hobbes’ hearing apparently works at longer distances more quickly than his smelling (which makes sense, actually).

My cat Joey can tell the difference between the rustling of deli wrap on bologna and that on ham. For the bologna, he doesn’t show up, but the second I start to make a ham sandwich he’s there doing kitty yoga to prove to me that he’s cute enough to get some ham.

Sometimes when I’ve been unable to locate all of the cats (just want to make sure they’re present and accounted for) I will rattle the can opener. That makes them show up. If that doesn’t work I will open up the catnip.

A great many years ago my mother made me two sandwiches, one peanut butter and jelly and the other tuna. Unfortunately, she slapped the pieces of bread together up and down instead of sideways. Tuna and jelly–at least apple jelly–is edible. Tuna and peanut butter is not (personal tastes may vary).

I’m just happy to see Calvin opening a can of pineapple for himself instead of junk food.

About cats and can openers, my cats have never been fed anything I had to open with a can opener (just the food with the pull off lids) yet they come running when I break out the can opener to open anything.

I have a cat and dog. The cat doesn’t do like Hobbes and ram me down. But when I open a can they both think its tuna. I do not have tuna and oil only tuna and water. The dog also likes first thing in the morning milk, although weaker milk not vitumn D type, and not very much. The dog is worse then the cat on begging and has good ears. Our cat we sometimes call baggy cat likes to take plastic sacks with handles and works it around his head and will walk around with the plastic sack on.

What a mess, pineapple chunks and sugar juice everywhere!

My question is this - Why is Calvin opening a can of pineapple? Kids normally do not like fruits or vegetables on their own. It should be the only thing kids normally will eat, mac ‘n cheese.

YUKONER: I know what you mean. The same thing applies to my dog. I can open a can of soup, vegetables, etc., and she pays absolutely no attention to me whatsoever. But let me START to open a can of her Science Diet wet dog food and she’s right there at my feet, whining and begging for it!!!!! HOW DOES SHE KNOW?!?!?!? She’s got excellent hearing so I guess she can tell the difference regarding the cans being opened but they all sound the same to me!!!

I never had a cat, only dogs so I don’t know about the tuna in the can thing. I had a roomate in college that could tell whenever I opened a jar of peanutbutter. She’d come bounding through the door like a cat looking for a snack. I always kept a drawer in my desk for our late night studying with iced tea, hot cocoa(we made with illegal hot pot), Cup-A-Noodles, Ritz and saltine crackers, and Cheez Wiz. She shared her favorite snack one night for peanutbutter, green olives with pimento, and saltine crackers. We snuck down in the middle of the night to one of the guy’s rooms that I knew had olives in his refrigerator, he kept to make his secret treat of martinis. We bought a jar from him for a couple dollars and he would later keep an extra jar for us in his frig. every week in exchange I bought him Cracker Barrel Cheese. Everything was a barter system there and since we couldn’t afford our own frig. it was worth it! If you get a chance try peanutbutter, olives, and saltines it’s really pretty good!
