Actually, the Earth was not farther away from the Sun. The Earth is tilted so that the southern hemisphere is getting more direct rays than the northern this time of year. That’s why it’s summer in Australia when it’s winter in the U.S.

Alright…somebody explain to the engineer how we’re moving in 5 (maybe 6) directions. I’ve been trained to see life in Cartesian space, so there are three directions to me, X Y and Z. However, my motion (instantaneous velocity vector) is just in one direction, which is some combination of those three, depending on how you define the coordinate frame. Many things contribute to my personal velocity: the rotation of the earth, the orbit of the earth around the sun, the orbit of the sun around the center of the galaxy, the motion of the galaxy itself, etc; but all of that resolves into one resultant velocity vector, which (currently) is approximately that way –>

So help me out here. :-p

There are six and they are as follows: Universal Expansion Rotation of the Galaxy (Milky Way) Rotation of the Solar System Rotation of the Earth Earth orbit Contental plate Tectonics although HINTZY is correct all of this motion places us on a terminal vector of ONE not-so-constant direction

    In addition to:

Universal Expansion (inflation) Rotation of the Galaxy (abt supercluster) Rotation of the Solar System (abt galaxy) Rotation of the Earth (abt its axis) Earth orbit (abt sun) Contental plate Tectonics there are also:

Axis progression of the earth (wobble)

    drift towards Andromeda (gravity)

motion of supercluster towards great attractor

To Silver pearl: When Greenland becomes green, mankind will have become extinct.

To Gweedo: Climate is doing fine. Mankind just won’t be doing well with the climate.

To tenacious: people are reluctant to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ (sic) because they now live in the 21st century.

Both of you are correct, which reminds us that Calvin’s dad is yet again filling his impressionable mind with erroneous information, something that is a recurring theme in C&H (Calvin came from Kmart, the world was black and white until the technicolor revolution, etc.). I like this one because it’s more subtle.

the author traveled by dogsled with the Greenland hunters.

    http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2006/01/arctic-hunters/ehrlich-text/7

On the next to last day of our trip we emerge from our hut on the north side of Kiatak Island. Jens and Mamarut are boyishly cheerful, despite the disappointment of having no meat to bring home. They race each other up a steep snowfield. Because Kiatak lies farther west than any other land in Greenland, they’re sure that, looking out over Baffin Bay toward Ellesmere Island, they’ll see an ice edge sturdy enough to hold their dog-sleds. This is where the walruses will be.

What they see astonishes them: There’s no ice edge, only the glitter of open water all the way to Canada. Jens blinks, looks away to one side, then back out at the sea.

“In my whole life, and that of my father and grandfather, there has never been anything like this at this time of year. Without ice, we can’t live. Without ice, we’re nothing at all.”

    gg

Too bad it wasn’t a straight -40. That is the same temp, no matter what (common) temperature scale you use. It even works for kelvins, since there is no commonly understood convention for minus temps on the absolute scale.

    Luke 2:47-52:

47 and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

48 And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing.

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father’s house?

50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

Well si_rat, what if you are wrong and we are right. That this is NOT all just some lucky fluke. That we were created with a purpose. That there is something more than just making through today. If we are wrong, when we die believing in Jesus Christ then nothing. If we are right, we spend eternity in Heaven with our Father. If you are wrong, when you die denying Jesus Christ you spend eternity in Hell. It is I who am sad for those who deny Christ.
