Forgive my off-topic comment here, but I wanted to get this in ‘before the deluge’ as it were..
An open letter to my fellow liberals:
As you are no doubt aware, Osama Bin Laden was killed yesterday, in a raid by US Special Forces in Afghanistan. Here we havea moment of justice for the 9/11 victims, and their families.
I would ask everyone to please not demean that moment, by using this as an opportunity to gloat, to bash, or to spew invective. ( And no, I don’t mean at Al-Qaeda. I’m sure everyone here knows what I’m talking about. )
Let us instead be grateful for the success of this operation. An evil man has finally met his fate, and now the souls of the 9/11 victims may perhaps rest a little easier becasue of it.
Some are saying that this is no more than a symbolic victory. That may be so, but it had to be done. Bin Laden could not be allowed to get away with it. Not at all.
Here in Philadelphia, our new idiot governor’s budget cuts mean that the school district may have to end full-day kindergarten – which not only shortchanges kids, but screws parents who will have to find day care or sitting service for half the day. Who thinks this is a good idea?
On the practical view, this means less American talent developed to compete on the global market, and more homeless people, and money spent on prisons and law enforcement - far beyond any $ saved on pre-school care.
So we save the country for our children by making it a poorer country for our grandchildren? Common sense says that if we are not steadily improving our education system, our workforce and entrepreneurs won’t be world class in the future.
And I don’t want to hear “we can’t afford it”. In 1969, we could afford to send a man to the moon while still paying for SS and Medicare and having perhaps the world’s best education system. Today, we’re already behind many other countries in education, bumming rides to space from the Russians, and a major party has proposed the end of Medicare.
Instead, we have the lowest tax rates in modern history. Is it really worth it?
Here’s an interesting tidbit I read yesterday: India graduates more honors students from high school each year than the entire number of children in America. So who do you think are going to get the jobs in the future? The US is still number one - in consumption, but not much else anymore.

Priorities! If they don’t cut out education they will have to raise taxes on the people especially the richest who pay little now. Can’t have that.
