It wasn’t much of a start of summer solstice here in Clark County, Washington when I began work at the grocery store this morning: rain. But at least it stopped and the sun was coming out before the shift ended in the early afternoon.

Can you imagine how loud he would be complaining if recycle bins were around and he was asked to sort it all out?

Don’t grouse, Calvin. I spent summers weeding the garden, picking produce and then helping to prepare it for canning. I was the smart one though, I also chose to watch the canner. No one else wanted to sit in the hot, steamy kitchen for hours on end, but I knew I could sit by the stove and read.

When you’re hard at “play” frivolous work gets in the way.

I miss those days… our summer vacation days back in the “olden days” of the 70s and 80s were more carefree and wide open (later on, with some Atari 2600 game play in there when it was way too hot) ;-)

I remember that garbage detail was a much messier job before plastic trash bags were invented. We lined the kitchen trash can with layers of newspaper, then upended the whole thing into the garbage can. The garbage man upended the can into a huge metal tub, which he carried balanced on his head. And dumped the tub into a reeking truckload of wet, rotting garbage. Not a fan of plastic in general, but plastic trash bags would be hard to give up.

I know how ‘Calvin’ feels, I remember Mom telling me that school begins next week and I say ‘We just got out of school last week’ and Mom says, ‘No that was 10 weeks ago’ ! ! ! !

It’s never enough, even when you fall asleep exhausted in the afternoon, right in the middle of the fun.

Can anyone imagine what Calvin would be like if he was confined in this situation that we are? I know he has a lot of imagination but with no outlet for his energy…..

Be fair, Calvin, your mom DID say, “Please.” Of course, “please” works better if it’s something on the order of “Please accept this ice cream sundae” or “Please accept this flying car.”

when i was his age and kids could roam around without child portective servies being called, my friends and i would spend summer days on opur bikes, leaving home after breakfast and just coming home for dinner , riding bike, going to parks, climing of rocks along the coast. exploring.

Calvin, don’t dwell on the occasional chores that come up in the summer; just the fun times.

Also, given the content of yesterday’s episode, it’s probably for the better that Watterson only dealt with Father’s Day once in the whole run of ‘Calvin and Hobbes’.

We went to the bitty little local farmers market today. There was a young couple in front of us who spent some time talking to the person guarding the entry… and eventually accepted the free masks and went in… but it was a loooooong discussion that seemed to revolve around “because we  don’t know you’re safe, so it’s just polite” on one side and “but I’ll  look silly and it doesn’t actually protect me ” on the other.

They reminded me of kids with about Calvin’s level of empathy.

PS: As we were leaving, I looked back and saw the gal from that couple walking along with her mask in her hand. The guy was still wearing his. Partial win, I guess.
