I always save my change….mostly loonies and toonies, though! It feels like you’re spending your money twice. The first time around, you buy what you have to buy; the second time round, you get to blow it on whatever your heart desires.
Hubby drops all of his change in a big bowl. Then when we need to pay a toll or only grab a tube of toothpaste, he wants to use the VISA. I love him, but. . .
Small Change: try putting all your pocket change into some donation box, Mickey D’s, Pannera – you know. I don’t miss it -it may be a $1 or 2 a week and if enough did it it might make a small but significant difference in someones life.
I could walk into a store with 99 cents in change have my purchase come up with needed change but never use it. I save it up for whenever I travel someplace then cash it in before leaving home. I easily save 8-10 dollars a week, times one year can make for an added travel bonus.
When the US state quarters started coming out I told my husband that I was going to get one of coin books for same (actually takes more than one) and fill it. He thought it would be better to save every one we received. This has continued with the National Parks quarters also. He is now saying that we have too many quarters and need to get rid of them and I should finish the book slots and then roll the rest and turn them in. Maybe it will balance the budget if I do it now. We need just over $US400 more than we will have to get through Septembers’ bills. :-) Never any cash to “blow” & hear desires have no purpose.
‘Saving’ is a tough thing to do…..today’s needs always seem much more important than saving for tomorrow. There is no really painless way to put money aside when you need every cent to eat today. You have to experiment with different strategies that just may work for you. My trick was to put all the small change left over from a grocery purchase into a ‘penny bank’ until I have a few dollars saved and then spent it on an item that benefited me in some way. Just keep adding small savings till you reach your goal.

I don’t sort anything anymore. Eventually it will go to a change machine in multiple trips.

Coins are fun to run your fingers through and pennies are the cheapest way to do it.

I rarely have change because I pay for nearly everything with a credit or debit card. I then pay off the credit card balance in full each month.
However, considering the growing theft of credit/debit card information, I might revert to cash for nearly everything before long.

Now to Arlo’s point: I remember my poor days, too. All too clearly.

Now I only sort the pennies looking for “wheaties”. Then it all goes to the Coinstar machine.

Maybe she’s concerned that the washer and/or dryer are going to be breaking down soon and she’s getting ready for the local laundromat.

Yes, Arlo, but today’s quarters buy what the nickles bought back then.

Ah yes, change. I like change but my wife says I’m stuck with her.
