Indoor cats weren’t a thing because women who had them kept being called witches and burned (I have the right to make things up as much as the next kid)
There were newspapers long before there were paper towels, but they were’t any more effective. And anyway the odors lasted longer than the effluent from the feline (or canine) gut regardless what pick-up was used, especially in really hot weather. Hence the concentration on odor control in litter box filler. Litter boxes – another industry offshoot from box making.
Cats are not domesticated even now. They live well with humans. That’s not the same thing.
As for indoor cats, my guess is that it was connected to the rise of the automobile. When I was growing up, a whole lot of pet cats were killed by cars.
I asked my master how domesticated he felt, and he just gave me that stare which I obsequiously understand to mean “Get going on cleaning that litter box right now, peon!”

Cats are the only animal that has domesticated itself. In other words, they turned us into their servants.

Her premise for indoor cats is not true. For proof, I give you The Flintstones.

For the definitive understanding of human-cat relations, I suggest The Silent Miaow (translated from the original feline) by Paul Gallico.

Indoor cats and dogs live longer than out door ones.
