I cannot see a plan base on pure spite turning out well. Unless the Degroot parents are supervising these kids shenanigans, everyone is going to incur big trouble.
Ergo we see thy conflict robust. Is it more noble to save thy reputation or thy remuneration. Are thee or is it thou ( is Les a thee or a thou?) forsooth prepared to forsake thy traditions and enter upon a new path. Thy choices are as doors in front of thee. Choose wisely.
This is great! I love that Tiffany is growing so much in empathy and understanding, and Les is getting better and better all the time. He knows, and disapproves that his mother is a grifter, he cares about the Fuse, even though he does not want to lose the little money his mom gives him; that won’t be a problem though I bet. He probably will do better in the end. Tiff will figure something out. It goes to show that his uncle Mr. Gray was so right: working at the Fuse and being around decent people, from Frank and Nancy, to Ox and Pru, and the rest of the Luannverse people is just what he needed to become the decent person he basically is. And this is why Mr. Gray wants Mrs. Berger to give up her long-deceased husband and become Mrs. Gray. This is so why this strip is one of the absolute best in modern comics. Kudos Greg and Karen.
@TYGE: You might want to recall that Les himself has been guilty of acquiring ‘ill-gotten gains’ on his own. Two examples: he was ‘collecting’ for Prudence’s charity (helping kids learn theater arts) from people in line to get into the Fuse, but somehow when he emptied the collection jar, it had almost nothing in it. Second example: he helped himself to tips that were left for the wait staff in Kafe Kablooey (yes, tips are usually split with busboys, but he took the whole tip.) So, as far as reminding Les that Ann’s money to him is from ‘ill-gotten gains’, that is a source of funds that Les seems comfortable with. He is a good example of the saying ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’
Several interesting things I note from today’s panels:
1) It appears Les is not in on the scam…. and does now even have absolute proof… he only thinks/feels it is a scam. To me this is a good sign…. it helps to reduce (perhaps eliminate) any culpability that Les may have when things go down here.
2) It is actually nice to see Les show some concern for “The Fuse” today as well. Even though he is also concerned for his own financial gain…. it was nice that the first aspect to come out of his mouth was a sign of concern for the well-being of “The Fuse”.
3) It is a bit surprising that Tiffany seems so strong in her assertion that she can prevent her Dad from marrying Ann. It seems to be quite a overly strong statement on her part since it seems her Dad has been primarily a minimally involved father for Tiffany who seems to do what he wants when he wants.
4) Saying that she is aiming for “Payback” is a little worrisome of a statement to me from Tiffany. I hope she is planning carefully and not too much out of just her emotions. I think this could go horribly wrong if she is not careful in her approach.
Why does she think that Les won’t tip off his mom? Even if he doesn’t like her, he’s getting paid by her and he may be sympathetic to anyone pulling off a scam having done so himself.
Les – “So If Our Parents got Married, You’d be My Step-babe, Uh, I mean Step-sister??”
Tiffany – “No that’s Not gonna Happen (I think). I wouldn’t let My Dad Marry Your Mom, for All the Lingerie in Paris. After all I have to protect the Money at all costs.”
Les – “Good! Because Being Your Step-Brother wouldn’t Stop Me anyway from trying to get into Your pan……,”
Tiffany – “WHAT?!!?”
Les – "I Mean, Good! Good! I think this is a Scam anyway for no other reason than the FACT that I HATE My Mom because She didn’t Pay enough Attention to Me when I was a Brat. I Could have stopped Mom long ago but I’m making Waaaaaaaay to much Money from My Share of the “Take!”
Tiffany – “Les, could You repeat what You just said and Speak Loudly into (The microphone Hidden in My) Scarf?”
Les – "Why SURE, Babe! Anything to Closer to Those Lovely, Bountiful Boo…., Hey! Wait a Second! If You Take down My Money, Uh, I Mean My “Mom,” “I” meaning “ME,” would lose Money! So How Ya Plan to Uh, You Know? “Compensate” Me for (A-Hem) “Services Rendered?” Hey, don’t worry about That Now. We’ll have plenty of time to discuss THAT later at YOUR place after the “Job.” You can model some of ’dat REAL Lingerie for Me, eh?"
Tiff – "We’ll discuss (GAG) “Compensation” later. I have to go home and take a Shower as I suddenly feel so unclean after inadvertently touching You. Just Make Sure I’m ON that List for the next Party. Get Me IN, and I’ll handle the Rest!"
Les – "Then I can “Handle” YOU! I Mean, Good! You’re on the List! Next Party is in a couple of weeks after We suddenly switch to a BORING story line to Build up Suspense! I’m gonna go Home and Lord this Development over My soon to be Step-Brother, and Target for My Abuse, Gunther, then Celebrate MY Good Fortune by Beating Him Up! By the Way. Did You Say Your Dad was RICH??"
Actually Pipe I think she is very specific in payback for Ann, who has hurt her friends (and having friends is important for her) in terms of shutting Ann down, and keeping her dad from marrying this harridan. It would be curtains for her inheritance if we get legal about it, and even more importantly, Tiff’s emotional relationship with her dad, so I think, humbly, payback is very specific for Tiff.
So if the scheme works, Les loses money. The theater space is no longer supported and they have to fire Prudence. The DeGroots lose money and have to close the Fuse. It is difficult to see an upside to this plan.
Seems like Tiff’s dad is a man with a footloose libido, so she could very well have a step brother or step sister hiding somewhere. This is getting to be like a soap opera.
What struck me about today’s strip is the last panel, where Les’s first concern was that Tiffany’s plan might hurt The Fuse. Les is definitely evolving!
Probably has mentioned once or twice, already but why exactly are they just not going to the police? Selling counterfeit clothing and scamming people are is a crime. Get the Luann’s parents in on it with the police and let them set up the sting. This would help save there reputation with being associated with the scammers and seen as not being complacent to the the crimes. Also you just know lawyers are already smelling blood in the water with not just one family member but two that are working on the “inside”.There little revenge scheme will make Ann lose money and probably break up the father relationship when he finds her to be a crook sure, but do you really think Ann doesn’t have a get away plan…one that doesn’t include escaping with a lot of Tiffany’s fathers money?
This is precisely why there are police folks. Heck depending on the scope, FBI as well.
Bummer. Les is in a no win situation. Most likely, he can’t get a better paying job elsewhere to get away from his mom if this one goes under – I think he’s aware that dishes at the Fuse isn’t his dream. But if he doesn’t help Tiff, she can now go to the police and anyone else saying he knew it was a scam. Blackmail is in Tiff’s repertoire and I’m not thrilled she’s “back to being the same old Tiff” by getting even rather then using her competitive instincts in a healthier way. I had hopped she’d learned something.

Interesting family, all told. Mr. Grey’s sister is a grifter, his nephew is a hopefully reforming grifter, and he himself has a mysterious Las Vegas past and influence over others suggestive of Mafia ties. What is Ma Berger getting herself into, here?
I think that Tiff is about to get the steady, committed boyfriend she never had. And Les is about to get the beautiful girlfriend he’s always wanted, with a rich daddy to boot.
Everyone is operating under the assumption that Irma Berger accepted Al Gray’s proposal. But I think the arc ended before that question was answered. So it remains to be seen…
Les has recently gained a sense of loyalty to the Fuse and the DeGroots, he may sabotage Tiffany for their sakes. And I don’t think it was too wise of Tiffany to tell Les she aimed to bring Ann down after she had just learned Les was Ann’s son. I mean think about it.
I don’t know what the law is regarding fake and counterfeit versions of merchandise (patented I suppose). An the obvious parallel is the Louis Vuitton handbag (a brown leather handbag with LV initials all over it), a status symbol item in New York, expensive and from France. Then imitation versions started cropping up and they were being sold off carts in Chinatown. From afar you can’t tell the difference. I have no idea if there was some settlement or what.
When Tiffany’s ire is roused, when she wants only vengeance, it is best to go along—even for a professional bully like Leskie Knox. It is just that the bloodlines tend to obscure the core conflict….
When it comes to people and scheming, Tiffany’s a pro. This is a bit of old Tiffany. I’d prefer that her goal be justice rather than payback. I also don’t like that she blamed Ann Eiffel for her weight gain (yesterday). That’s a bit of stretch as if she’s not accountable for her physical self and how she reacts to circumstances.
I wonder if Ann can ask her Chinese fake lingerie suppliers to make her some designer orange jumpsuits so she’s comfortable and fashionable in prison? ;-) I hope Greg keeps this arc going without jumping off to others for awhile, at least! It’s far too entertaining. I’m spending way too much time trying to figure out what these FICTIONAL characters are going to do next…feeling sorry for Tiffany because her jerk father is ignoring her, wondering what is going to happen to Prudence when they find out she let Ann rent the fuse for free, or a pittance of what it should rent for because Ann manipulated her to feel sorry for the poor penniless single mom….well you get the idea. LOL
