It dawned on me as I read this comic what the ultimate outcome and resolution of this issue would entail. I feel like I should have seen it sooner. Some armed group, and as a practical matter it will make no difference if they come from the right or the left, will amass a sizable armamentarium and will declare some version of a revolution against the government. They will mount some serious attacks on targets of their choice and will kill some number of their perceived enemies and not a few civilians. At that point, even the Repugs and the NRA membership will declare that enough is enough, throw out the hooligans running the show, and realize that unlimited access to unlimited firepower for every Tom, Darla, & Harry is a fundamentally bad idea. It will take them a long time to remove the vast quantity of hardware already in circulation, but they will have to ban the military grade gear for everyone. Then maybe we will have a return to sanity on this one issue.
Changing our gun culture would be like trying to covert ISIS to Judaism. If Congress can’t simply require better background checks, prohibit the sale of military grade weapons, and require handguns to all be “smart”, we have become our own terrorists.
Guns would not be needed for “protection” if there was an environment of mutual trust and respect for fellow Americans and faith in a government that worked 100% for the people rather than a partisan environment that thrives on hate and division.
I’m a gun owner, hunter, combat veteran (disabled), former law enforcement officer, and American. There is NO rationale for a civilian to have a rifle with cabacity more than five rounds, “automatic” cabability-modified or manufactured, armor piercing bullets, “silencers”, or unlicensed carry of concealed/concealable weapons. Just a couple viable changes the NRA opposes, while accepting “some” aspects of background checks.

SPINELESS and TOOTHLESS – {limerick}
Repugs tend spineless and toothless,
so Gun-nuts succeed when ruthless
in pressing their cause, -
- ’tho it’s full of flaws
and based on nonsense quite truthless.

Thanks that you might tolerate my off-topic items. Sometimes {as here} they’re “stream of consciousness” streaming from the day’s Toles-’toon.
OUR CULTURE’S BEEN UNDERCUT – {rhyme}
In perusing the news I am miser’ble, …
… ’tho I laugh at the antics derisible
performed by the nuts
who support the putz
who as President struts
while he undercuts
what’d made us indivisible: – - -
- – - a Culture which valued humanity,
and pooh-poohed stark insanity,
and rejected a pol’s sheer vanity; …
… Turned Off by Trump-ish inanity.

Please excuse it that this entry is so off-topic. I enter it mostly to send the really-funny image of Chris Christie dancing.
THE ERSTWHILE TRUMPITE – {rhyme and image}
re the Erstwhile-Trumpite Chris Christie: – he
undulates in this pic rather twisty-ly, …
… his body-language wistful-ly
expressing his future’s myster-y: – - -
- – - Will he forEver just twist in the winds
of the tornadic future that Trumpism portends?

What we need are fewer republicans in position of responsibility since they don’t care about American lives.

We don’t HAVE a system. We have an “I don’t give a DAMN about you” ethos.
