Well the price depends upon what all is getting served with it.

“Gratuitous” would, I think, be in reference to a tip: gratuity. And the numbers are all primes. A standing rib roast, also known as prime rib, is a cut of beef from the primal rib, one of the nine primal cuts of beef. But I don’t get it, either. There’s some connection I’m not making.

Not really following Jef here. I’m stuck wondering what happened to his 2nd ‘f’.

I think he’s just trying to pick a prime number to price a prime rib dinner…

maybe thinking the menu would, like today’s strip, offer a little joke or puzzle…

would the customers notice that it would always be a prime number?

    Gratuitous? $37?

Nobody would buy the $13 plate because it would have to be skimpy, or poor quality, or both…..

I think he just means $37 is the next prime, but it doesn’t need to be that high to prove the quality.

Gotta remember though… in real life Jef is probably a vegetarian or vegan….

Seems to me he made Frazz one too, but I can’t say for sure.

Neither probably ever goes to a steak house.

The reality is that you can occasionally find a prime rib special at a few local chains in the range of that low price…

not the finest beef or the most generous cut…

but not too bad if you crave a taste of it…..

especially those who have neither the means nor the occasion to roast a huge piece of expensive beef.

    Plenty of people buy it.

Whereas, if you go to a fancy prime rib place in a big city,

the price can climb well past that $37 into much higher primes.

    Mallett thinks $37 is gratuitous…

The House of Prime Rib, in San Francisco, i’ve heard, is almost $50 now…

It’s an expensive throwback to the 1960’s …. by no means avant garde… prime rib restaurant I went to once, long ago…..

with good beef but the rest of the food is very middle of the road.

What would Frazz think of $67, or even $89 at a higher end restaurant??

If you’re willing to spend it, there’s always someone willing to accept it.

Last time I bought a standing rib roast it was $103, and I still had to cook it. Okay, sure it was the whole 7 bone roast instead of a single slice but still…

    37 is a Sheldon prime.37 is the 12th prime, 73 is the 21th.

Aren’t all of those prices (along with the $37 one) PRIME NUMBERS?

I didn’t get it either, but the comments helped. I thought it wold be a math problem, but hadn’t known it was also called a prime rib. Also, being that I seldom eat meat, I had no idea what a standing rib roast was, why would it be standing? So I learned several things from the comments, 7 ribs would be somehow tied in a manner so they really do stand, Standing rib roast is prime rib, and a lot of kids his age don’t even know what a prime number is, don’t know what age they are, but yesterday, the reading level of “Chaz the choo choo” would seem like the kids he usually talks to must be around 7-8 top, but we already knew that Caufield is a genius, reading “college? level/high school level” books, prime numbers and words like gratuitous.I remember reading that book in high school.

I thought the one about what he was reading was yesterday, but I couldn’t find it at all. must have been in my imagination. Didn’t she say " one college level book is not equal to 4 chapters of Chaz the choo-choo?"

There’s a casino here in Vegas that serves a $9.99 prime rib dinner (The Longhorn on Boulder Highway if anyone really wants to know) that is very good. No skimpy servings and it is well cooked and delicious.

I got the primes with the hint at the end. I got the pun on gratuity. I don’t get it, but what’s fun is thinking about it. I know and trust that he means something consistent. It’s worth the effort even if I didn’t get there today.

They had standing rib roasts at the Pick ’N Save starting at about $60, but that would be prime rib dinners for 5-6 people.
