‘we have nothing to fear but fear itself’ – so the politicians took their cue from good ol’ FDR and produce as much fear as they possibly can and solve nothing so the fear doesn’t go away. that way once elected they have a lifetime salary (even after retiring we, the people, pay them salaries) without doing anything at all but generate fear which is much easier to do than solve the reason for the fear.
