Clearly Jack has food, teeth and naked guys on his mind. If Luann had asked goth boy, Nil, the same question, what answer would he have given? I would guess it would be something like:

Mother dark. Manic depression. Here the carcass is slaying with a spikey stake, when we stripe our eyes lines to raw ebony inky-ism.

Professor Zebo’s interpretation of the picture reminds me of something my Sociology professor once told us. “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, blow them away with BS.” ;-D

Isn’t is kind of standard with this sort of art that no one can specifically say what the artist is saying, as Zebo is doing?

There’s a fine line between reasonable skepticism and intellectual nihilism. The jump from “I don’t get what’s going on here,” to “There’s nothing going on here” is small. It’s a sort of world view preservation stance. I want to believe everything is logical, well ordered. I want to believe that what you see and immediately comprehend is all there is. These are survival mechanisms. But human thought and expression are capable of so much more. How can a picture of a hole mean anything? How can a canvas that just has a hole in it mean anything? Why is one opinion more valid than another? That last one is particularly threatening to most of us. “My opinion is just as good as yours!” Well, sometimes. But suppose you are better informed than me? Suppose you have read interviews with, say, Jasper Johns in which he says in various ways, “I am interested in art as a collaborative experience. Art happens when the creator and the observer interact. So some of my work is about interaction.” You and I are standing in front of a Johns work, a large canvas, blue. A hole has been cut in the canvas, a key inside. Turning the key activates a music box. Now, knowing what you know from the interviews cited, is it likely that you are better equipped than I to say something about what it all means? When presented with a baffling situation, our tendency is to try to figure it out. Failing, we likely regard it as meaningless. It’s not a matter of devaluing something we don’t “get.” It’s more that survival mechanism to protect our world view. So, it’s natural to reject, to devalue, to ridicule. Though I’m not an artist but a bookseller, I’ve read enough to have several workable approaches to modern art. So when I see a canvas blank except for a tiny barely visible pencil mark, I have a reasonable way to interpret what’s going on. I always assume something intentional is going on.

If what you see in a painting isn’t obvious, then it isn’t art in my mind! But, I’m old fashioned and….oh yes…old! What you see to the left is an example of my art! Titled “Great White Heron in the Wind”.

I’ve mentioned the ‘Three Stooges’ vibe before regarding Luann-Nil-Jack and Larry-Moe-Curly (both groups respectively relating in that order), and it’s here again. [I do like it!] ‘Professor’ Zebo fits right in that mold as the stiff, straight-man to their antics. Others earlier today posted him as ‘Professor Pretentious’ and as one who makes up crap – just as a straight-man would, and they are right!. As I said, ‘and it’s here again’. :)

Why is this the ONLY class we ever see Luann take? And why is it lingering over several years? She’s obviously completed at least two academic years…. no reason she should still be in this class now. Did Evans and Evans ever go to college? Also, how many more signals do we need that the professor is gay?

Professor Zebo is basically a plot device. Actually he is pompous, but I bet he really is quite a good teacher. We all had teachers with “interesting” personalities, but often they are really great if we admit it. My bigger interest is where this arc is going. Nice to see Nil (?) too. Jack is trying his best to learn something and as a teacher I appreciate that. But that is window dressing. Where will this fit into Luann’s relationship life, and in Luannverse, to be (what) or not to be (what) is the question.

There are smart jocks and dumb jocks, hateful jocks and considerate jocks. Sometimes it’s the smart ones who are mean, the dumb ones kind… but it can be the other way too. Once again, prejudices and preconceptions are difficult to change because we are so comfortable with them and they support the rest of our belief system. I know a brilliant woman married to a dumb jock. He’s one of the nicest guys I know, and she is just as fine a person. They are a wonderful, happy couple.

Where is this “Museum of Modern Art”? Did they take a field trip to San Diego or LA? If so, did everyone go separately instead of in a group, and that’s why Luann is late?

Maybe Greg or Karen had a ‘Professor Zebo’ in their college art course life and have created this character as a result. Or as a composite of some weirdo quirks their art professor(s) possessed.

As for Jack: Nice guy, but I don’t think that junior college’s have football teams and he really doesn’t look like a scholar. Maybe he’s in a welding program and will create the kind of heavy art that they sell in all those Summer art fairs. He’s certainly more open than Piro and way better than Leslie.
