Ah, the Transmogrifier. It’s here that Calvin and Hobbes goes in a fun and wonderful direction. It’s worth noting that the Transmogrifier arc comes after the dying raccoon arc and the destroyed forest arc. Perhaps Bill Watterson realized that after two depressing (but necessary) storylines in a row, something more upbeat was needed.
