Being big sister, it often fell to me to tend to the minor injuries of my siblings. I knew the discomfort/pain of alcohol, peroxide, Merthiolate, etc. So, giving it a positive spin, I said it was the germs running away, and that calmed them a bit.
If Earl hasn’t skinned his knee since he was seven, I’m guessing he wasn’t much in to athletics. I had perpetual holes in the knees of my jeans, and my folks owned stock in Johnson and Johnson.

Those antiseptics do more damage to the skin than they help healing. Soap and water clean the wound without causing further damage.
