You know, the chicken crossed the road to show the possum that it can be done.

You could call them the Tuna. They swing like fish and drink like them, too.

Good Morning to all the usual suspects and to those who have felt “left out”

But of course, pamlicorat. Playing dead is definitely a last resort.

I’m with you on their looks, though. Weirdest things I’ve ever seen outside the fossil record.

Two vultures get on an airplane, each of them carrying one dead possum under each wing. The flight attendant looks at them and says, “I’m sorry, but only one carrion allowed per passenger.”

I agree, pamlicorat. They are nasty and scare the heck out of me. Good morning, Cavers!

Looks like someone’s been watching Bobby Cox and the Braves - they’ve been playing terrible lately, also…

A Texas Tech coach noticed a strange white chalk like material on the field. Afraid that it may be something toxic, he called in out of state experts who identified it as the goal line.

By the way, I have seen a possum play dead. We harrased it a long time before it did, though. I’ve caught many of them as a kid and even had them as pets. As for crossing roads, In our area, it’s usually possoms on the half shell (armadillos) that don’t get across.

The American ‘possum (aka the Virginia Opossum) is the only marsupial not found in Australia. They were voted off the island because they’re the only marsupial that isn’t cute.

(Any Australian readers should be aware that our ‘possums look rather different from yours. They’re more rat-like, including bald scaly tails. In the U.S., any father who called his daughter “My little ‘possum” would come very close to insulting her.)

Iwa Iniki - It is properly spelled “opossum”, however, it is usually pronounced without the “O” at the beginning. At least, that’s the way I’ve always heard it pronounced here in KS where they are quite common.

“Possum” is technically an incorrect spelling, but it’s common enough to have its own entry in Webster’s Dictionary (dunno about Wiley’s).

That entry, however, simply reads ”possum n (1613): OPOSSUM”

(The Webster’s entry for “opossum”, by the way, indicates that the pronunciation of the first “o” is optional.)

fritzoid Go to the head of the class.

Even tho’ “possums” are rather prehistoric looking and acting to me, they have a right to survive when possible in my opinion.

I rescued one by freeing the back legs from my fence, the thighs were caught but his head and front legs and upper body were through. He played dead during this procedure or I would not have dared to do it even with heavy gloves on. He was coming up on our deck along with racoons, squirrels etc. The deer rest in the back yard so far. Oh, yes, we do live in town.

A mortally injured female possum with babies turned up on our back porch, right at the back door. No fear. It’s like she knew she was done, and found someone to take care of her babies. So, because it’s against the law to harbor wildlife, we became criminals. No, we weren’t caught. Raised them until about half grown, when someone vandalized their cage and they disappeared. Weeks later I was sitting alone in the living room watching TV late at night. I caught movement to my left. In waltzes a possum. Had to be one of the kids.

A year ago, we had 3 baby possums which would climb onto my deck platform bird feeder for a snack. At first they could barely reach it (even though it’s only a few inches off the ground.) Later there were only 2 but they were growing well. I thought they were cute and they didn’t mind when I turned on the deck light and looked out the window at them.

If you cover them with pie dough and cook them, they make good hot pockets.
