What is wrong with Luann just dating? And dating different guys? Why does it always have to be the same formula… She likes guy, crushes for a long time, eventually after some shenanigans he asks her out… then immediate relationship that lasts till he moves away, physically or emotionally. How about this actually seem like a semi-real college experience? Meeting some guy for coffee, no sparks, moves on. Try again…

Although he has wanted to make passes multiple times, i wonder if Jock (a Scottish first name, BTW) might have something else in mind. Perhaps there is a seminar that night on something art related, or on understanding one’s strengths, interests, etc. and how they might bundle in unexpected interests.

Just because Luann is now unattached doesn’t me she has to accept a date. “Yes” is not the default answer in this situation. And Luann is not obligated to invent a stupid excuse – although people usually do. This arc may take us to a date, because Luann hasn’t learned how to say “No.”

I understand why, with recent events, people are extra wary, and i understand parts of the endocrinology of it and that some people are being very bossed around by their adrenal cortices turning out extra adrenalin right now.I understand something else, though, having lived in danger when i was a battered child: this is something you need to rule instead of letting it rule you. It is only by managing to do that that your choices will be level headed enough to be helpful, and in all honesty managing to do that bit by bit gives freedom and strength. I do not remember how a person begins to do so – it is too long ago – but think of it as shifting focus, putting the fear (which does remain though can be reduced) off to the side and instead paying attention to the goals that exist whether they are self-protection, protecting another, making progress, creating positive change, or something else useful.Seeing certain comics may feel too harsh for some here while being tender right now, but i guess a first step to reduce personal discomfort would be to take some slow and deep breaths (which actually can produce the right biological feedback and reduce the adrenalin effects problem in the equation) and tell yourself what the comic does and does not say. Small things can sometimes seem larger and scarier when a person’s biochemistry gets stuck in that mode, so look at it like helping get a car wheel out of sand.

Greg Evans has chosen for Luann to spend time with only these two guys from all the students in her art class, and with no one at all from any of her other classes, ever since she enrolled in CC. It is therefore inevitable that he would set her up on dates with one of them (and then perhaps with the other). That is inevitable, since this strip never ventures far from its comfort zone. (Remember meeting “Muncher” and “Killer” in NYC? Me neither.)

6I like it that Jacque “Jock” figured out that Emory “Emo” had received all “A” grades on his art. In my opinion, even though I think it would be best for Luann to not go on a date with Jacque “Jock”….. I only say this because of the track record she has….. anytime she has a romantic interest, it seems to consume her energy and efforts completely to the exclusion of nearly everything else. Now… that said…. if she could go on a CASUAL date with Jacque “Jock” to just have fun and to get to know him more…. then I would say…. great! Go for it!!!!IMO, Luann does not need any “long term” romantic interests at this point in her life. She should be having fun (perhaps with casual dating) and figuring out her life plan.

Could someone show us where and when it was revealed that the two classmates of Luann are named ‘Jacques’ or ‘Jock’ and Emo? I know I’m not a long time reader, but I’ve been following the comic since Luann started college. I can’t recall any time when the comic itself identified names for these characters. I think these are names that posters have given them.

It would be normal for her age for Luann to casually date – but hopefully only those who actually interest her, also normal for her to attend events with friends including with one or more male friends. When i was about that age i had two male friends i always hung out with; one of our group called us the Three Musketeers. They are both gone now (normal health causes that got them a little early) but both were great friends. We were very diverse as a group, but strongly hit it off as friends. That type of casual socializing is healthy and will not detract from education. To readers it will seem like Jock (which coukd be his actual name if his family is Scottish) has asked Luann out several times, but most of the times he just asked his friend if it woukd make sense to try. Has he actually tried yet? I think maybe he did once, but maybe not.Meanwhile, we do not even know if he is thinking of a romantic date or something more public like attending a seminar open talk or a public lecture together because the topic is of mutual interest.

Like the single-named “Quill”, “Piro”, “Viper”, “Hair”, etc., further identification is superfluous. We don’t know much about who these people are (other than tidbits like “He’s an actor, from Australia!!!”), so why should we know their actual names?

Steve’s sport talent in high school is one he coukd not do now w vision changes, but despite being near-sighted he was very good at marksmanship because he can control his heart rate. This is something i did not know until after he needed an outpatient surgery. He was a bit loopy coming out of it and in that altered state he found it very funny to take his heart rate up and down to set off the alarms. Finally, they had me sit with him, watching the monitors and breaking his concentration each time he began chuckling and do it.

I suspect this will be a two week arc. Whatever is going on here cannot be resolved in two days. Evans has invested a lot of arc time on Luann in art class and Luann doing well in art class. As characters, Jock and Emo would seem to be just supporting cast at the most. I’m hoping that this arc will culminate in Luann getting some sort of signal that art should become a passion for her.
